Getz Funeral Home - Las CrucesIt is with sad and heavy hearts that we announce, Virginia Ortega, 82, of Las Cruces, New Mexico, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on November 23, 2025. Born on March 25, 1943, Virginia lived a life defined by love, generosity, and an unwavering devotion to her family and the many children whose lives she touched.
She is preceded in death by her beloved son, Tommie Ortega; her parents, Ambrosio Sanchez and Josefita Padilla-Sanchez; numerous siblings; and her precious great-granddaughter, Emery Burns.
Virginia leaves behind her husband of 63 years, Mike Ortega, whose partnership and love were the foundation of her life. She is also survived by her daughter, Lisa Trujillo, and son-in-law, Gary, daughter-in-law Kathy Ortega along with the grandchildren who brought her immeasurable joy: Nicole Trujillo, Jessica Trujillo-Burns (Cameron), Alyssa Trujillo, Tommie Rae Ortega, Michael Ortega, and Breana Ortega. Her legacy continues through her beloved great-grandchildren: Grady and Kayce Burns, Jacklynn and Riley Ortega, and Jocelynn Romero. She is also survived by brother Gilbert Sanchez (Rosemary) and Ida Olivas (Ruben) and many nieces and nephews.
Virginia also held a special place in her heart for Sabrina Quinn and family, whom she lovingly embraced as her own.
With a natural gift for nurturing, Virginia had a soft spot for all children. She dedicated countless years to caring for little ones, shaping young lives with her kindness, patience, and motherly warmth. Those entrusted to her care were truly blessed—each child she welcomed felt safe, cherished, and deeply loved.
Virginia’s impact will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and the many children whose lives she helped shape. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, strength, and unconditional love.
She will be profoundly missed and forever remembered.
Services for Virginia will take place on December 9, 2025 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral with the rosary scheduled at 10:00 am and a funeral mass to follow immediately after. Burial of cremains will take place at a later date.
