Vivian Laverne Richard, age 83, lovingly known as “Maw-Maw,” passed away on July 22, 2025, in her hometown of Irving, Texas. Born on March 2, 1942, in Dallas, Texas, Vivian was the cherished daughter of John Alexander Varnell and Florence Nettie Varnell. She spent her formative years in Irving, where she graduated from Irving High School.
Vivian built a fulfilling career at EDS before enjoying a well-deserved retirement. A woman of passion and joy, she was known for her love of gambling, watching wrestling, and supporting the Dallas Cowboys. Her greatest delight came from the time spent with her family, including her beloved children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Countless days were spent playing board games, where laughter and love flourished, nurturing bonds that will be treasured by those who knew her.
On April 17, 1970, Vivian married Cecil Ray Richard, with whom she shared many years of love and companionship until his passing. Vivian is survived by her four children: Toni Castillo, Tamra Montemayor, Ricky Richard, and Toby Alaniz. She also leaves behind nine grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, and another great-grandchild on the way, extending her legacy of love through generations.
Vivian's family extends its deepest gratitude to her granddaughter Maranda for her unwavering love and dedication during Vivian’s final journey. As a full-time caregiver, Maranda provided comforting support as well as companionship, laughter, and peace during challenging times. Her selfless devotion demonstrated a profound expression of compassion and family love that will resonate within the hearts of those who witnessed their bond.
Vivian was preceded in death by her parents, John and Florence Varnell, her husband Cecil Richard, and her sister Martha Pryor. Her vibrant spirit and warm heart will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Visitation will be held on July 28, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Chism-Smith Funeral Home, located at 403 South Britain Road, Irving, TX. A funeral service will take place the following day, July 29, 2025, at 12:30 PM at the same location, with a graveside service to follow at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens at 2:00 PM. Both locations are in Irving, TX.
Vivian Laverne Richard's life was one rich in love, laughter, and heartfelt connections. Her memory will forever remain alive in the hearts of her family and friends.
