Volda Veronica Parris
Sunrise: January 10, 1942 - Sunset: January 5, 2026
Volda Veronica Parris, age 83, passed peacefully on January 5, 2026, with her two daughters by her side, just five days before her 84th birthday.
Born in Vreed-en-Hoop, Guyana, to Ivan McGarrell and Iris Granville (née Parris), Volda immigrated to Brooklyn, New York, in 1982, later lived in Atlanta, Georgia, and moved to New Jersey in 2008 to live with her daughter, Dionne. She worked for many years as a Certified Nursing Assistant, a role that reflected her natural instinct to care for others in practical, hands-on ways.
Volda was a woman of deep conviction and unforgettable presence. She was determined and strong-willed, with a signature honesty and a no-nonsense way about her. She showed love in tangible ways by showing up, helping, providing, and making sure those she cared for were taken care of. Her home was a place of warmth: there was always food being prepared, music playing, and people gathered. She loved to cook, dance, garden, and share good company. Generous and wise, she served as a counselor and had a steady voice to many.
Faith was important to Volda. She became a member of the Irvington Assembly of God Church, where she served as an usher and welcomed others and served faithfully.
True to her candid and humorous spirit, she often said that although she never drove a car in this life, in her next life she would be a driver.
Volda's care for her family was constant and practical, especially for her grandchildren during times of health challenges. Her steady, direct, and protective presence will be deeply missed. Her legacy lives on in the lessons she taught, the meals she made, and the countless ways she showed up for those she loved.
Volda was a devoted mother to Grace Moore and Dionne Yamster and mother-in-law to Edwin Moore, and a proud, loving grandmother to Teniesha Moore, DeAndre Moore, Gabrielle Naicken, and a great grandmother to Kiyomi White.
She is also survived by her siblings Curine Carrington, Lloyd Granville, and Pauline Franklin, and was predeceased by her sister Bridget Trotz.
Volda was a cherished aunt to Roxann Thompson, Yonette Peters, Andre Granville, Simone Pacely, Stafford Granville, Hubert Granville, Marcia French, Nicola Franklin, Tracey Franklin, Joseph Franklin, Samantha Allen, and Christopher Trotz.
She was predeceased by her aunts Eileen Spencer, Ivy Wharton, Carmen Parris, Princess Marshall, Nora Parris, and Aphonso Parris.
She is lovingly remembered by her only surviving aunt, Ophelia Parris and a host of great nieces and great nephews. She will also be missed by her cousins and extended family - Wharton, Grimes, Crawford, Marshall, Parris, Lewis, Spencer, Moore, Jeffers, Abrams, and Cameron
She was predeceased by cousins Kenton Wharton, Clevil Parris, Colin and John Marshall.
Although we loved her dearly, we could not make her stay. God called her home, and we take comfort knowing her love, strength, and legacy remain with us always. Rest in peace, Volda. Until we meet again.
Volda will live forever in our hearts.
