W. Bernard VanOrman, 80, of Newfield, NY passed away surrounded by his son and loving family the evening of August 24th, 2025, at Cayuga Medical Center.
Bernie was born on May 5th, 1945, to Ray and Emma (Kinsman) VanOrman. He grew up alongside his four siblings whom he loved dearly: Ray (JoAnna) VanOrman, Nanette (Wayne) Butler, Terrel (Pam) VanOrman and baby sister, Alice (Robert) Nash. A lifelong area resident, he was a graduate of Ithaca High School and retired from the Ithaca Fire Department where he made his mark as a proud union leader and one of the first EMT’s to serve Tompkins County.
Bernie enjoyed 43 years of marriage to his loving wife JoAnn (Salamino) VanOrman. In their time together, they raised their beloved son, Todd. The three remodeled an old farmhouse- with help from their friends and family- where countless memories were made through the years.
He is survived by his son Todd Cosmo (Tamara) VanOrman, granddaughter Sarah (Zach) Milicic, grandson Xavier Samuel VanOrman, great-grandson Miles Cosmo Milicic and a new great-grandson due in November; as well, his loving companion JoAnne Thibadeau, and sister Alice along with many nephews, nieces and cousins.
In addition to his parents, Bernie was predeceased by his wife JoAnn and siblings Ray, Nanette and Terrel.
Calling hours will be held at Bangs Funeral Home on Saturday September 6th, 2025, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations in his memory be made to the Tompkins County SPCA, 1640 Hanshaw Rd., Ithaca, NY 14850 or the Newfield Fire Department, 77 Main St, Newfield, NY 14867.
