I'm one of his cousins. I've heard great things about him from my dad, but never met him, cause I'm too young. I'm 12 years old, and my dad had kids late. I'm sad I never got to meet him.

Many times when the "Deaconess Girls" get together, we talk about the olden days when we wre in school together and Mrs Hilgenberg (Mary Alice) was one of our teachers. She was beautiful inside and out and I suppose it gave us great hope that someday we could be a beautiful as she was. During finals, one year, Baus, Rick and Seif walked across the street to Monahans for a cup of coffee. Guess who was there - Wally Hilgenberg. He probably knew us because of our uniforms. Anyway, he started to talk to us and actually picked up the tab. I think we floated on air all the way back to the dorm. We felt pretty cool indeed. Mary Alice was pregnant and our class (69) gave her a baby shower. Can you imagine that? I don't remember what we got her but it was probably peanuts compared to what she got from others. Anyway, it has been great listening to and reading the various sites on Wally. I am so happy that you are all Christians and that we will see you again in heaven. May God bless you and give you a wonderful CHRISTmas. Love, Donna

I grew up in Wilton Iowa or as Wally always refered Wilton Jct. I was in grade school when Wally played for the Vikes. He would come home and be intruded on by my friends and myself, he always took time for us. When he talked to our class you could hear a pin drop.Im sorry for the loss and Wally will always be a special boyhood memory for me.

Mary and family:
My thoughts and prayers are with you in Wally's homegoing. I know that God is with you and your family in this hour and he has given you many friends and family to be by your side. I encourage you to reach out to them in the days ahead as they become the hands, feet and mouthpiece of Jesus in ministry to you and your family.
I have been a friend of Kaye Dawson since 1974 and have been blessed by the stories of courage, strength and Christian commitment which have been shared with me. I am also a friend of Tracie Schissel of the Minnesota Lymefighters as I also am a Lyme Disease patient. Tracie
has been so touched by Wally, you and your family and I pray that the
witness will carry through to personal relationship with Jesus.
May the peace of Christ, which passes all understanding, guard your heart and life today and in the days
to come.
In Christ's love,

First & Foremost,
My condolences and prayers go out to the Hilgenberg family.
I grew up being a Vikings fan because my grandparents lived in Elmore, Mn. I was born & lived in Council Bluffs, Ia and also was a true Hawkeye fan & I have been a true blue Viking's fan ever since! It was the "Purple People Eaters" I loved the most....along with Eller, Page, Tarkenton, ect.....
May Mr. Hilgenberg be the M.V.P. in the heavens above for this gallant year of 2008 on God's Team.
I pray for a "Gardian Angel" like Mr. Helgenberg as he sounded like a fantastic man.
May Mr. Helgenberg rest in peace and know he is remembered by many and will be missed by all. I pray to meet you in the heavens some day.
I hope to grow old and have the faith, strength, courage, and love that this man displayed through-out his life.

Our prayers are with you as you continue here on earth, until that day that you will again reunite with the man that you love so dearly. We are thinking of you and praying for you.

While students, two of my sisters and I worked in housekeeping during the summers at then called Mankato State Univeristy. For about 4 years we, alomg with only a couple of others staffed the residence hall where the Vikings stayed during summer training camps. Wally Hilgenberg was always one of our favorites. We were not groupies and we took our job seriously, including respecting the players' and coaches' only place for privacy while in camp. In return Wally was nice and respectful. We did have fun though! Don't remember that he ever verbally responded to having his bed short-sheeted! Imagine our dismay when in the fall of 2006, the three of us along with my mother arrived at the Rapidan Dam diner and were told by the owner (still wearing his waders) that Wally had just left after a day of fishing at the dam. I think the owner was surprised at hearing the 3 of us remembered hiim and what a close possible envounter! Blessings on all of you family members. Sounds like he was a wonderful husband, father, grandfater, and friend.

Though it's been several years since I last saw Wally, I vividly remember going to the hotel where the Vikings were staying when they played the Falcons in Atlanta. What a highlight as a little girl to be surrounded by all those big football players, and having Bud Grant come sit down with us and Wally introduce us to many of his teammates. As my mom is a Hilgenberg, I grew up watching Sunday football with all the guys, rooting for the Vikings, the Bears and the Saints, with our eyes peeled for Wally, and then later Jay and Joel. To Mary and all the cousins I've never met, I extend my deepest condolences, but so happy to hear that thru his trust in Christ, that he was able to share his faith with others.

Well Wally, you were on the losing end of the four "biggest games" of your life. We, as Viking fans, did feel the agony of defeat right alomg with you. But as "true" Viking fans, we were also very proud of the effort that you and your teamates gave each and every year, each and every game. And now, because of your commitment to your team and to your family and friends, you are finally on the winning side of the "Biggest Game" there is. The game of life! You can now rest in peace, Wally, and enjoy the "greatest trophy" one can have. Heaven! Thank you for being a part of so many great memories I had watching you play!

I grew up as a great Vikings fan. My favorite player was Wally. I was a linebacker and I asked my high school coach if I could wear his number. I wasn't bad, all conference and we played for the state championship in Iowa in '75. I never met wally but I in later life would just look him up to see what was happening in his life.
My Dad held Iowa season tickets for over 30 years until he could no longer travel.
So, I've followed the whole family. How wonderful that you were all holding his hand at the end.
I've printed out Wally's picture and will keep it on my wall for a long time to come. Never met, but he had an inpact on my life from far.
Thanks Wally,

Wally Hilgenberg spoke to a gathering of Mankato State University students in 1986 - I was in the crowd. Thank you Wally! My sincerest sympathy and prayers to your family.

I am very sorry to hear of Wally's passing. I have never met Wally or even been to Minnesota. One night my family and I were watching television back in the early 1970’s in NY and my sister saw the Viking's playing. She noticed one of the players had the same last name as us Hilgenberg, and this is not a common name. I instantly became a fan of the Vikings. I wish I could have met Wally in person, since the day I first saw him play with the Vikings I was and always will be an avid Vikings fan. I really wished the Vikings would have retired the 58 number for him. Over the years, I have purchase some Viking stuff especially if it had number 58 on it, and it remains a treasure for me. Everything I ever read about Wally was a stand up guy, and this was not just on the playing field. I wish Wally’s family the very best. He is a true hero to his family, fans and community.
God Bless

I see many entries that mention Wally was a genuinely nice person. I couldn't agree more.
I first met Wally at a banking convention in the mid-90's. During a slow traffic period, I left my company's booth and wandered the floor to see who else was exhibiting. Someone introduced me to this imposing figure named Wally Hilgenberg. My eyes must have been as big as saucers, because - as a Hawkeye - I recognized that name immediately.
Wally was thrilled to meet a fellow Iowan and chatted with me for quite some time. I would see him twice a year at these conventions and he always remembered my name and would spend time chatting with me (usually about the ups and downs of the Hawks).
I'm so sorry to hear of his suffering and his passing. But I can say that he will be remembered fondly by many, many people. I will certainly miss that twinkle in his eye and big smile on his face.

To the family of Wally Hilgenberg, prayers and support from all of us who have been affected directly and indirectly by ALS. I grew up a long pass from the old Met in East Bloomington, and was in attendance at most of the Vikings games in those early years. Wally was one of the players I'll never forget. It is so comforting that Wally had come to know the Lord, and had friends like Jeff Siemon, and the rest of his teammates. God Bless

My sympathy goes out to the Hilgenberg Family. As a native New Yorker and an avid Vikings fan for 39 of my 47 years, Thank you for so many warm Sunday memories on my TV through the years. I fortunately had the pleasure of meeting Wally at a dinner in 1989 that honored that special 1969 Viking team. Most of the players I met that evening were very nice, but the one who impressed me most was Wally Hilgenberg because of his warmth and genuineness. Although he shared stories and experiences from his playing days with my wife and I, he was equally interested in my line of work and how my life was going as a NYC firefighter. I had taken many photos that night of the players and one of the photos in particular he had aked me to send to him(one with His teammates Winston, Warwick and Himself). Needless to say I sent the photo to him, and he returned an autographed photo back to me. Coincidentally, another friend of mine who was a viking fan as well, ran in to Wally a few years prior while visiting the twin cities, but had no idea who Wally Hilgenberg was) Wally made sure that my friend had tickets for the game and exchanged addresses and told him if he were to ever come back up that he would get him tickets if he needed them. Although my friend didnt know Wally at the time, I'm sure he will never forget him.
I will always remember Wally Hilgenberg as a warm and genuine man, and oh yes, a great football player.
GOD BLESS

My sympathies to the Hilgenberg family . I enjoyed watching Wally play first at the University of Iowa and then for the Vikings . His passion for the sport was easy to see and was admired . I met Wally once and asked if I could take his picture and that he sign my son's football card of him . He said yes and thanked me for asking . My son , now forty , still has the picture and the football card .Rest in peace Wally . Fred Timson

Higenberg Family & close friends-
Deepest condolences upon the passing of a remarkable man, husband, father, friend, and athlete.
I grew up as a kid cheering on the Purple People Eaters with Wally, here in Duluth, Minnesota. I sure would not want to be on the receiving end of one of his countless bone crushing tackles, wow what a tenacious player, yet off the field a humble gentle man of God.
Rest in Peace now Wally, free from the grips of a sinister disease that robbed you of your body, but never of your mind and kind spirit, which lives on in so many that you touched in a life well lived. Well lived indeed Wally.
God Bless all the Hilgenberg family .
Respectfully,

When I was a kid I had the fortune of meeting Wally during a photoshoot for a Lund Boat catalog. My dad was the photographer and I was his grip. I was a grunt--holding the boats still in freezing water, etc. Wally and his family were on the shoot for a week. I always have had fond memories of that time and his loss strikes a sad chord for me.

For myself, and an entire generation of Viking fans, Wally's era will always remain the apex of the franchise's history-- on-field success plus teammates that stayed together, year after year, is a thing of the past in the free agent world of professional sports today. And Wally was one of the pillars of that "40 for 60" group. He was larger-than-life to me as a teenage fan, but that pales in comparison to the tributes read in the last day about his faith, family and friendship. For that, more than anything, he will remain a "legend" to me. My sincere condolences to all those who mourn his passing.

My condolences to the Hilgenberg family. The older legion of Vikings fans are all truely saddened at this time. As a kid, I had the purple #58 jersey. Everytime I put it on, it reminded me of Wally and how it took a team effort to play games and win. It reminded me of Joe Kapp's "40 for 60", Fran's ability to make something out of nothing, those fearless, non-relenting goal line stands and why I was a Vikings fan through thick and thin. Those teams helped build a sense of loyalty, gave meaning to celebration and learning to deal with disappointment. Sure, there were the 10's, 88's and 44's out there (and we love 'em all), but it was as much the 53's, 58's, 59's & 60's that made those teams of the 60's & 70's tough and memorable. I hope that those players on those early teams know that their fans always appreciated them. We know they appreciated each other as many (like Wally) remained in the state and stayed in contact with each other over the years. As Vikings fans, like the players, we miss those days. Skol Wally! May you live in Valhalla Forever!

Football is back; and as high school, college and professional players hit the grid iron; fans and players get caught up in the excitement of the season. As with any sports season or sports carreer it eventually comes to an end and all that remains is fading memories. In a culture that tends to focus on the temporary things of the world we usually forget about the eternal things. Wally's testimony will live enternally.
I first heard Wally's live testimony at a Men's breakfast several years ago and I was very blessed. Most recently on DVD, I had an opportunity to hear his testimony after he was diagnosed ALS; and again I was very blessed and encourged by his faith. I obtained DVD of his testimony from Search Ministries who video recorded his testimony at a January 17, 2008 Staight Talk Event honoring Wally. Every sports player and sports fan should see Wally's testimony. Even if you are not a sports enthusiast you should see it. Thanks Wally for sharing your faith when you had an opportunity, we know that know that heaven is now celebrating your homecoming unlike any homecoming or superbowl party on earth.

To Mary and Angie --
I was so saddened by hearing about your husband . . . your dad. But, what a joy to know he's with Christ. Angie, I was so touched by the TV story about you and your dad hunting. Know that I think of you often and wish for you the very best. You are a good friend. Mary, I remember Wally serving at the Bloomington Assembly women's banquet at which I spoke . . . he was always a servant; he really made the banquet. And, it was a joy when he gave his testimony to a packed sports center at Meadow Creek for a Super Bowl Sunday party. Many came to Christ then, and through so many of Wally's events, using the stories of his life and his testimony to lead people to Christ. He touched my life, just as both of you have. I am sorry for your family that he's gone. However, what a wonderful living testimony his life will always be.

I hunted with Wally a few years ago at the South Dakota Governor's Pheasant Hunt. He talked a lot about his family and especially about wanting to use all of his available time watching his grandchildren in their various events. He had his heart in the right place.

Mary- You and Wally blessed and touched our lives each and every time we were priviledged to be with you.
Your love for Jesus radiated in word and deed.
Your love for each other stands as a beacon for every married couple to follow.
Your love for others embraced all you were with.
We thank God for Wally and for the eternal impact he had on so many, including us.
We know that he is just where he wants to be, with the One he committed his life and heart to.
Our prayers are with you and the family that the Great Physician will bring healing to your aching hearts, knowing in faith that you too will one day meet the Lord before the throne where Wally now resides.
To God be the Glory!

I have many fond memories of Wally. We grew up together in Wilton, Iowa. When we were young boys we explored and fished the nearby streams. We belonged to the Boy Scouts and went camping together. When in grade school we would have a fast lunch and then get up enough players to play tackle football. In high school we played football together. We loved football. After graduation we went our seperate ways. Wally went on to play for Iowa in the Big Ten and then went with the Pro's. I was always proud of Wally and admired his success. In closing I have this message for Wally. The day will come when I will join you where you are now, and we can once again fish the streams and round up enough players to have a game of tackle football.

I have terrific memories of the young Hilgenberg family. I was their babysitter in the early to mid 70's, when they rented a house on Dellridge Road, in Bloomington from a U of M professor that went on sabatical. At the time, they had 3 children; Eric was just a baby. I remember one time babysitting for a home game (and the party afterward) that I was paid in wet currency. Apparently some of the players had tossed each other into the swimming pool. I have very fond memories of Angie, Amy and Eric (Kristi wasn't born yet at that time). I bet you kids are all terrific adults and good parents now, because you were great kids. I'm sure you'll be wonderful support for your Mom. My heart goes out to you. It's never easy to lose someone you love, no matter how expected. Blessings Debbie Rogneby Dix

Our deepest sympathies, Mary and children! Wally will be missed greatly by all who knew of him, assuredly. It was with admiration we watched Wally play in the “golden years” of the Vikings. All those folks played for the “sport” of it and not the money. His life after football was equally exemplary and, while Patrick Reusse ponts out the “mean and feisty and much loved,” the emphasis needs be placed on the latter. It was obvious that Wally loved His Lord and Savior. He was such a joy to listen to in later life as he expressed the beauty of the Christian life in the many times he was asked to share. As we think of Wally, as we reflect on all that he did, we will remember most what he did for Christ, the only thing that really matters as he so well knew and professed. God bless the memory of Wally Hillgenberg!

I grew up with those early Vikings and what great memories that bunch of great guys and athletes gave all of us. So, so many young boys would identify with the players, Wally being one for sure, and we played those autumn days of football with their names on our backs and on our lips. Thanks for those memories and I look forward to meeting you one day in heaven...that's the very best part!

Being a Vikings' fan since they started in 1961, one of my most cherished memories occurred in January of 1976 when Wally, while speaking for the Cancer Society with a friend who worked for the Cancer Society, came to visit my roommate and me while we were living in an apartment and attending college in Bemidji. He was a great guy, very friendly and down to earth and fun-loving. He forever made fans of all of us.
He helped create the cherished legacy of the beloved Vikings of the late 60's and 70's by being a hard-nosed, intelligent, consistent linebacker who competed at a high level of intensity at a time when the NFL was still being played by athletes who were in it for the love of the game and who took defeat personally.
No image of the Purple People Eaters standing on the frozen turf of Metropolitan Stadium would be complete without Wally Hilgenberg standing behind them as an outside linebacker, wearing his #58.
Thank you Wally. Rest in Peace.

What a blessing Wally was to all of us who watched him battle ALS. His Spirit was an example of a man who did not fear death, knowing that this life was just the beginning. My prayers are with his family and many friends who loved him so much. Thank you, Wally for teaching us how to live for the Lord.

Reading the story today about Wally and his relationships with teamates, the obvious love of family and his spiritual commitment was truly a reminder about what is important. I laughed at the hunting stories and cried for the loss of his family and friends. May God comfort and bless you all in the days ahead.

Wally was a consistent force on the Vikings defense for over a decade. He was mainly under the radar for most of his career, but that doesn't mean he wasn't a great player!

My sympathy goes out to the Hilgenberg family. Growing up I can not remember a day that Wally and his family were not a part of. From my dad being co-captains with Wally at Iowa, to playing together at Minnesota and our families being closer than friends but as an extended family. I can remember fishing in Wally's pond at his home as a kid to having the honor of Wally presenting myself and my new wife to all our family and friends at my wedding. Wally and his family have always been there for my family in our times of need and we will always be there for them. I will forever have love, respect and great honor in having the chance to grow up in the presence of a great athlete, Outdoorsman, Christian and most importantly a great family man.
You will alway be remembered!

Our family lived in Owatonna Mn from the mid-60's to 2001 and our whole family enjoyed watching the Vikings together. Wally and some of the other players came to Owatonna and played a charity basketball game and signed autographs and had pictures taken with the kids. Our son and daughter were VERY young but clutched those autographed Wally Hilgenberg photos in their hand and put them on their walls in their rooms. Our now 37 year old son still has his autographed photo of Wally from that wonderful night.
I know as a family that as Wally moved slowly away from this earth and toward his God you have had a sadness in loosing his daily presence in your lives. But the reward of eternal life means he will be waiting for you.
May God's blessings of love and peace help you through this difficult time.
