Walter W. Barteld, 91, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.
He was born in Wilkes-Barre, a son of the late Walter and Jennie Barteld. A graduate of Coughlin High School, he enlisted in the Navy and honorably served for 20 years. Following his discharge, he was employed by Tobyhanna Army Depot and later by the PA State Harness Racing Commission at Pocono Downs.
Walter was a member of the East End Primitive Methodist Church, where he served on the Trustee Board, Landmark Lodge 442 Free and Accepted Masons, Irem Temple Shriners and its Legion of Honor, was a life member of Plains American Legion, Post 558, and was the past district commander of the American Legion.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Thelma (Stephens) Barteld; brother, Donald Barteld; and son-in-law, Ted Kozemko.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret Barteld; daughter, Pamela Kozemko; granddaughter, Corinne Santarelli and her husband, Anthony; grandson, Jared Kozemko and his wife, Cheryl; and great-grandchildren, Madelyn and Mia Santarelli.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday from E. Blake Collins Funeral Home, 159 George Ave., Wilkes-Barre. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Marty Garms, pastor of East End Primitive Methodist Church. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Interment with military honors will be in Chapel Lawn Memorial Park, Dallas.
Memorial donations may be made to East End Primitive Methodist Church, 79 Laurel St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.
