Walter Barton Obituary

Walter "Nick" Waymond Barton, Jr., age 92, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, January 25, 2026. He was born on May 1, 1933, in Greenville, South Carolina, to the late Walter W. Barton, Sr. and the late Cora Mae Young Barton.

As a lifelong Greenville native, Nick lived a life marked by quiet strength and deep pride in his roots. He remained closely connected to the community, watching in awe as Greenville grew into the bustling hub it has become. He graduated from Greenville High in 1951. He attended the University of South Carolina, and developed a lifelong love for Gamecock athletics and was especially "passionate" about Carolina football. He also served honorably in the United States Navy and was a Korean War Veteran, reflecting his strong sense of duty and service.

Nick loved his family and was a man of faith who trusted in the Lord and found comfort in His promises. He was preceded in death by his wife of many years and the mother of his five children, Polly Murray Barton; his young son, Richard "Keith" Barton; son, Wayne Barton; daughter, Marty Keller; and his brother, John M. Barton.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 32 years, Beverley Barton; his daughters, Laura Lee Barton and Cathy Cooper (Todd); his stepsons, James Butcher (Jamie) and Daniel Butcher (Jokabed); his daughter-in-law, Patricia H. Barton; his granddaughters, Lauren Vanderwood (Matty), Patricia Cooper; and his great-granddaughter, Lily Shelnut.

A celebration of life service will be held on Friday, February 6, 2026 at Mauldin Methodist Church. The family will receive friends beginning at 1:00 p.m. followed by the service at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mauldin Methodist Church, 100 E Butler Rd, Mauldin, SC 29662 or Triune Mercy Center, 222 Rutherford St., Greenville, SC, 29609.
