Walter Lee Boatright, age 76, passed away at 3:25 a.m. on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at his home.
Walter was born on July 11, 1948, in Peoria, Illinois, to Eugene C. and Phyllis (Boswell) Boatright.
He grew up in Stonefort, Illinois and graduated from Carrier Mills High School in 1966. After attending Southeastern College and then working in Chicago for several years, Walter returned to southern Illinois, where he graduated from Southern Illinois University in 1976 with a bachelor's degree in agriculture.
He was a lifelong farmer in Saline and Williamson Counties and was also active in livestock competitions throughout the state for several decades.
Walter had many interests. He was a firearms expert and had an encyclopedic knowledge of the history of American firearms. In addition to collecting antique guns, during the 1990s and beyond he shared his knowledge and expertise by working as a firearms safety instructor with the Illinois 4-H Foundation.
He worked for many years at Olin and General Dynamics in Marion and also moonlighted as a most beloved bartender at PK's in Carbondale.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents.
He was a devoted sibling, uncle, cousin and friend to many. He is survived by his sister Susan Fosse of Marion and brothers Monty (Maria) Boatright of Norwood Park, Illinois and Todd (Susan) Boatright of Stonefort. Also surviving are his nieces and nephews: Adam and Amy Edwards Fosse and their children Avahlyn and Autrey; Eric and Jenette Mulcahy Fosse and their children Levi and Anna Pauline; Meagan Boatright (Dan Carberry) and Mia Boatright; Josh and Kristy Boatright and their children Ella and Cannon; Jeremy and Lindsay Boatright and their children Brinley and Grant; Sarah Boatright and her son Gabe. Walter will also be missed by his Boswell and Joyner cousins and his lifelong friends in Stonefort and beyond.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, 900 N. Court St., Marion, IL.
The family will hold a private memorial service for Walter Boatright at a later date.
