Walter Carr Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium on Mar. 10, 2026.
Walter James "Jimmy" Carr III went home on March 08, 2026, in Columbia, SC surrounded by love at the home of his daughter Carrie.

Jimmy was born in Sumter, SC on April 28, 1947, and was the oldest child and son of the late Walter James Carr Jr. and the late Evelyn Burress Carr.

He is survived by his daughter Carrie McMahon, and a grandson, Myers McMahon both of Columbia; a sister, Carol Tinkey and husband, Mike of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and two nephews, Will Baker and Rutledge Baker.

Jimmy grew up in Sumter and graduated from Edmunds High School in 1965. He attended Clemson University, served in the National Guard and started his professional career working with Keels Engineering in Columbia, SC as a draftsman. He later worked with Wilber Smith & Associates Engineering in Columbia as a Survey Crew Chief and with Croft Engineering of Sumter in the same position.

Jimmy became licensed as a Professional Land Surveyor and finished his working career as the Chief Mapper for the Sumter County Assessor's Office where he oversaw the creation of the GIS program and many mapping projects for Sumter County. In this capacity he became known to area surveyors, lawyers, appraisers and anyone who had dealings with real property for his excellence in mapping accuracy and the extensive research files kept on properties in Sumter County. Jimmy retired from this position in June of 2011 and spent many years following caring for his mother, Evelyn at her home in Sumter, SC. He truly loved roaming the woods in Wedgefield and nearby Manchester State Forest with his much-loved dog, Roscoe.

Jimmy was respected by everyone for his gentle nature, absolute integrity, and fairness. His encouraging nature as well as loyalty to friends & colleagues is fondly remembered by all who knew him. He was especially fond of his mother's Burress family farm in Wedgefield, SC. He loved the folks in that community where he spent many weekends growing up and later lived for a time.

Graveside services will be at the Sumter Cemetery on Friday, March 13 at 2:00 pm followed by visitation at the Meeting House at Memorial Park in Sumter. This will be a celebration of Jimmy's life, and everyone is encouraged to come and share their stories about Jimmy with his family and friends.

Pall bearers will be Chip Teague, George Wise, Bill Lindler, Sam Tisdale, Ron Suber and

Gary Deal.

Honorary pall bearers will be members of the Land Surveying community and the South Carolina Society of Professional Land Surveyors.

Memorials may be made in honor of Jimmy Carr in lieu of flowers checks may be sent to the SCSPLS Scholarship fund of the South Carolina Society of Professional Land Surveyors at SCSPLS, 826 Assembly Street, Columbia, SC 29201.
