Walter Chernenko, 91 of Westfield, passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2025. Walt was born March27, 1934 in Detroit, MI to the late Walter and Mary Chernenko. He graduated from Taylor University and received his master’s degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
Walt was a teacher. He taught social studies and physical education and taught in the Career and Technical Education (CTA) program. He was a coach of a variety of sports, including golf, football and baseball, at the high school level and in community recreational teams. His career was spent in Durand, MI, retiring from the Fairfax County, VA school system.
Walt was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, Indianapolis and was a member of a senior softball league where he played until he was 80 years old.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00pm on Saturday, May 31 at Flanner Buchanan-Hamilton Memorial Park, Prairie Waters, where a Celebration of Life will continue after the service until 2:00 pm with refreshments.
Walt is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lenore; daughters, Robin Anne (husband, David) Chaddock and Susan Lynn Chernenko; grandchildren, Madison (husband, Nick) Wood and Grant Chaddock; great grandchildren, Julia Gonzalez and Bennett Gonzalez.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that memorial contributions be made to nonprofit Morning Light, where Walt volunteered and his granddaughter and grandson-in-law work. Your support will help ensure others can experience free and compassionate comfort and care at the end-of-life. In alignment with Walt's loves, the donations will go to purchasing bird food and flowers to beautify the hospice resident's gardens at the Home.
