Walter Hutchison Obituary

Walter L. Hutchison

February 26, 1938 - September 4, 2025

Walter L. Hutchison, 87, of Lincoln, formerly of Louisville, passed away on September 4, 2025, at The Landing in Lincoln. He was born on February 26, 1938, in Omaha, to Manford and Lucille (Tlustos) Hutchison.

Walter grew up in Louisville, graduating from Louisville High School. He went on to attend the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, where he completed ROTC, earned his bachelor's degree, and later received his master's degree in music.

Walter first worked as a school teacher before serving two years in Germany with the U.S. Army, beginning his service as a Lieutenant and rising to the rank of Captain. Known for his strong writing abilities, he was entrusted with handling correspondence for his Colonel. At a very young age his writing talents were recognized when his letter to Santa won first place in the Stepping Stones to Stardom contest on KFAB radio in Omaha.

Following his military service, Walter returned to education, teaching music and starting the Gretna Band program. His Wilber marching band went on to earn a Superior rating at State. He later left teaching to perform with his brothers as part of the Hutchison Brothers Band, which played across the Midwest, including the Holiday Inn on 72nd Street in Omaha and at "Top of the Wheel" in Harvey's Casino in Lake Tahoe, NV.

In 1978, Walter with his family opened Popeyes Chicken in Lincoln, which they successfully operated for 25 years. On December 8, 1983, Walter married Margery (Burns) Heitman, and together they cherished nearly three decades before her passing in 2011.

He is survived by his brothers, Ronald (Susan) Hutchison and Glenn Hutchison; niece, Carrie Hutchison Adams (Nick); great-nieces and nephew, Kyle Duffy, Samantha Duffy, Amanda (Bradyn) Berlie, and Lydia Duffy; as well as numerous friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Margery.

In keeping with Walter's wishes, a private service will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.

Back in the early 70's, I got to sub with the Band at the old Esquire Club and other Lincoln places. Great guys and terrific musicians. Rest in peace Walt.
