Walter A. Laba
October 17, 1923 - October 2, 2025
Walter "Wally" Laba passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 2, 2025, just 15 days shy of his 102nd birthday. He was the best man we've ever known - a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and proud Marine.
Born on October 17, 1923, in North Chicago to Stanislav and Pauline (Kropacz) Laba, Wally was one of eight children. He lived a full and extraordinary life defined by love, service, humor, and generosity.
He married the love of his life, Olga (Tomas) Laba, on January 25, 1947, in Kenosha. They shared 70 beautiful years together until Olga's passing. Wally and Olga raised three children - Gary Laba, Thom Laba and Charlene Laba.
Wally was a proud Marine, enlisting on March 25, 1943, and completing his training at Camp Pendleton. He served with distinction in the Pacific during World War II, stationed in Maui with the Marines Fourth Division and seeing combat in Roi-Namur, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima. From February 1944 to March 1945, he served bravely as a cannoneer of a 105mm howitzer crew, holding his post through heavy enemy shell fire. For his meritorious service, Wally was awarded the Purple Heart, a Commendation Ribbon, and an individual citation from the U.S. Marine Corps recognizing his devotion to duty and conduct in keeping with the highest traditions of the Corps.
After returning home, Wally built a long and hardworking career, first as a drill press operator, bus driver, and mechanic, and later as a Supervisor at AMC/Chrysler, where he worked for 30 years before retiring.
Wally was truly a man of many talents - a gifted artist, acrobat and mechanic - a true jack of all trades. He had a mischievous spark that stayed with him throughout his life, and a warm heart that touched everyone he met.
He was a devoted grandpa to Tara (Steve) Waters and Rianne (Louis Price Struble IV) Esquivel, and a proud great-grandpa to Collin, Caleb, Charles, Luke, Connor, and Sadie. His six great-grandchildren brought him endless joy and laughter. Wally's adventurous life recently came full circle when he took an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. with his nephew Gary Beltoya, an unforgettable experience that deeply moved him.
In addition to his beloved wife Olga, and sons Gary and Thom, Wally was preceded in death by his seven siblings: Anthony, Angeline, Helen, Joseph, Sophie, Mary Ann, and Betty.
In his final years, Wally was lovingly cared for by his daughter Charlene in the home he built and cherished, surrounded by a lifetime of memories and the deep love of family.
Wally's life was one of courage, creativity, devotion, and laughter. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege to know him.
A visitation for Wally will be held on Tuesday, October 7, 2025 from 10 am to the time of the service at 12 pm, at the Piasecki Funeral Home. Interment with full military honors will follow in St. Casimir Cemetery.
