Walter Gene Langley, 85, of Winterville, North Carolina, passed away surrounded by the love of his family. He was the son of the late Walter and Dorothy Stocks Langley.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at 2:30 P.M. at Wilkerson Funeral Home, 2100 E. 5th St, Greenville, NC. A visitation will be held prior at the funeral home from 1 P.M. to 2:30 P.M. Burial will follow at Pinewood Memorial Park. The family will be receiving family & friends at the home of Alton & Cynthia Wadford.
Gene worked for many years with the State Highway Commission and later retired from Burroughs Wellcome after 30 years of service. He also worked with the North Carolina Prison System and was a charter member of the Winterville EMS program, proudly serving his community for many years. Upon retirement, Gene continued his life of service by working at Wilkerson's Funeral Home, where his kindness and compassion touched many families.
A compassionate member of his community, Gene was always helping others-especially during times of need and relief efforts. He was a frequent volunteer with the Salvation Army, an organization dear to his heart. It was there, as teenagers, that he met the love of his life, Faye, beginning a partnership that would last more than six decades.
Never one to sit still, Gene also owned and operated a local bakery during retirement and was a talented auctioneer, something he loved and practiced throughout his life.
A man of many passions, Gene loved gospel music, George Jones, and classic country songs that spoke to his heart. One of his favorite things to do was sit around and sing with his family, filling the room with music, laughter, and love. He also loved playing his harmonica, often bringing joy to those around him through his music. Gene took great pride in cutting grass, making sure every yard he touched looked just right. His infectious sense of humor could light up any room and bring a smile to everyone he met.
Above all, Gene loved his family deeply and lived his life with joy, laughter, service, and faith. He was a light to all who knew him, and his warmth, generosity, and love will be forever remembered.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Virginia Faye Langley, and his beloved daughters, Kim Langley, Cynthia Wadford and husband Alton, and Leigh Cobb and husband Randy. He was the proud grandfather of Alex Wadford and wife Mary Beth, Andrew Wadford and wife Amanda, Ginny Langley, Noah Cobb, and Jonah Cobb, and the cherished great-grandfather of Cambree, Bryson, and Lindley Wadford, and Anderson, Adaline, and Avery Wadford.
Gene is also survived by his siblings: Floyd Langley and wife Joyce, Ken Langley and wife Jackie, Rick Langley and wife Angie, Sheryl Gardner and husband Keith, Charlie Langley and wife Frankie, and Mike Langley.
He was preceded in death by his siblings Shirley Langley, Jack Langley, James Langley, Wayne Langley, and Elaine Nichols.
