A Life of Faith and Service

Walter Leon Morris was called to his eternal Heavenly rest on Thursday afternoon, February 5, 2026, at the MCV-Virginia Commonwealth University Hospital, Critical Care Unit in Richmond, Virginia, surrounded by his caring family.

Early Life

Born on September 9, 1937, in New Kent County, Virginia, Walter was the son of the late Luke Morris and Sarah Crump. He was the third of four siblings.

Commitment to Faith

From a young age, Walter joined Second Elam Baptist Church and remained a devoted member throughout his life. He served diligently as church treasurer, participated on the Usher Board, and became a Church Deacon in 1975. Later, he was a Watch Care Member at Shiloh Baptist Church in Williamsburg, Virginia, where he continued his dedicated service as a Deacon for more than 50 years.

Family Life

Walter met the love of his life, Mildred E. Braxton, and they were united in marriage on December 5, 1959. Their loving union was blessed with five children.

Professional Achievements

Walter dedicated 28 years to the Naval Weapons Station in Yorktown, Virginia, retiring on July 2, 1993, as a Field Ordinance Officer. He also worked with Newton Bus Service for many years. After retiring from that position, he founded his own business, "Walter Morris Tours," providing bus trips from Virginia to distant destinations, including New Orleans.

As the bus driver for Shiloh Baptist Church's annual trips to People's United Baptist Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Walter faithfully served his church community for many years. After concluding his bus service, he continued his work as a driver for New Kent County, Virginia.

Legacy and Remembrance

Walter was preceded in death by his parents; son, Keith Morris; brothers, Stevenson Morris Sr. and Irvin Morris; and granddaughter, Serena Acosta.

Deacon Morris leaves behind his wife of 66 years, Mildred B. Morris; two sons, Carlton Morris and Waverly Morris; two daughters, Deborah Lipscomb and Aisha Edwards (Andrè); five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Anne Pearl; sisters-in-law, Rachel Shearin, Sandra Trower, and Thelma Braxton; brothers-in-law, Herman Braxton (Dianne) and Reginald Braxton; a special cousin, Josephine Jones; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, co-workers, and caring friends who will cherish his memory.

Celebration of Life

A service to celebrate the life of Deacon Morris will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 14, 2025, at Shiloh Baptist Church, Williamsburg, with a viewing beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Second Elam Baptist Church.
