Walter Charles Pressler, Jr., age 79, of Indianapolis, passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2025, surrounded by his family.
Walter was born on October 14, 1945, in Toledo, Ohio to the late Walter Pressler and Ruth Maxine (Weiker) Pressler. He was a 1964 graduate of Shipshewana High School, attended Ball State University, and graduated from Indiana University, Fort Wayne with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management. He met the love of his life, Norma Jean Brooks, at a dance at Ball State University where they danced together and talked. He realized that they were meant to be together and found her the next day saying, "Hey, you in the blue coat!" because he forgot her name. They were a perfect match and they spent the next 56 years together in marital bliss. They enjoyed vacationing at the beach together and visiting many National Parks. They loved hiking and camping in their pop up trailer throughout the years. Walt was active in the Boy Scouts of America with his son. He loved the outdoors and made many lifelong friendships through his involvement in scouting. When he was younger, he ran several 10 K runs but as he aged, he switched to walking. He walked 2-3 miles every day up until 2 months ago. He enjoyed weekly golf outings with a group of friends since moving to Indianapolis 5 years ago. He was also a member of The Sons of The American Legion, Post 355 in Greenwood.
Walt was a talker and a thinker, but a great listener too. He frequently talked to strangers and was known to find new friends everywhere he went. He had a great sense of humor and loved to tell his jokes, particularly his Starbucks joke and cow jokes. He was a great listener and even days after a conversation, would be offering up advice to help "fix things" for those he loved. Even through his battle with health issues, he was more concerned about how his wife and family were affected by his illness, than his own welfare. Walt was a grateful man and was aware of how fortunate his life was and took nothing for granted. He was a loving husband, magnificent father, and fantastic grandfather. He was the man that went sledding, swimming, and played catch with his kids. He took his grandchildren to the zoo, fishing, to the splash pad, and bought frozen treats at Zesto's. He was well known by his family for "Grandpa's famous waffles". He always made time for family and let everyone know "it sure was good to see you". He was an optimist throughout his life and stayed positive, even when times were tough. He instilled a great work ethic, love of family, and the importance of quality time together. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Norma Jean (Brooks) Pressler of Indianapolis; one son, Brian Pressler of Savoy, IL; one daughter, Michelle McKinney (Scott) of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Logan McKinney (Payton), Spencer McKinney, Savannah McKinney and Peyton McKinney; and great-grandchildren, Leah McKinney and Abigail McKinney; brothers, Paul Pressler of Goshen, IN, David Pressler of Goshen, IN, and Jim Pressler of Shipshewana, IN; sisters, Marietta Comer (Eric) of Elkhart, IN and Roseanne Phend (Art) of Fresno, CA; brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.
