SMITH, Walter P. Jr., 90, of Sandston, passed away Sunday, August 9, 2009. He was preceded in death by his wife, Iva Twiford Smith; brother, Stuart Smith; and sister, Kathryn Adams. Walter attended school in Richmond, Cass Tech in Detroit, Advanced Aviation Engineering in Chicago and Burbank and VCU in Richmond. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Aviation branch during WWII, 1941 to 1945. Walter was an Architectural Service Rep for U.S. Plywood Corp., opened his own business, Architectural Wall Systems Inc., and then operated as a General Contractor. He was a longtime member of Corinth UMC and a Master Mason of Sandston Masonic Lodge for 57 years. He was active as a volunteer in many civic organizations, including the Boy Scouts, Ruritan Club, the Lay Witness Mission Program, and he had a passion for the arts: writing poetry and stories and designing sculptures and driftwood flower arrangements. Walter was also an avid salt water fisherman and loved the water and boating. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., with a Masonic service at 2 p.m., on Sunday, August 16, 2009 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Avenue, Richmond, Va. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, August 17, 2009 at Corinth United Methodist Church, 23 West Williamsburg Road, Sandston, Va. A private interment will be held at Washington Memorial Park prior to the service at the church. My late husband, daughter, and son met Walter in the Eastern Church bowling league and fell in love with him. He was an amazing man who drew people to him naturally. I am so sorry for your lose but I know that the memories you have of him will never die. I wish that I had heard about his death earlier as I would have liked to expressed these sentiments in person. May God bless and keep you.

I have lived in New Kent for 20 years, 17 of them knowing Walter. I met Walter when we worked at Colonial Downs together as he was always around to give a hand shake and tell a story. In years after seeing Walter at Colonial Downs we would see each other in passing, usually at Primas Pizza, and he never forgot to speak. Walter will be greatly missed by me as a friend and a brother mason.

I met Walter when they were filming a TV segment for PAX TV, ( It's a Miracle) at our home, around 2001. We became friends after that and his friendship will be missed. My condolences to his family.

As a friend and neighbor when Walter lived in Bradley Acres, one example of his thoughtfulness stands out. He always stopped when he saw me out working in the yard, no matter how busy he was, to check on the family. One day he waved and blew the horn as he passed. The next day he made a special stop by and I was surprised when he knocked on the door. He wanted to appologize for no stopping the day before. He was one of the most thoughtful men I know. I have missed him since he went to the home, and will miss him now even more. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, the family, during this time.
