Walter Jackson Smith, Sr., 93, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away, Sunday, August 31, 2025, at Brookdale Assisted Living, Hagerstown, MD.

Born Sunday, September 6, 1931, in Roberdell, NC, he was the son of the late Boyce William Smith and the late Lily Hudson Smith.

He was employed at Wade Mill and then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Jack served in the Occupation Force in Germany. After the war he was again employed at Wade Mill. Later Jack found employment with Great Southern Trucking later known as Ryder Truck Lines which brought him and his family to Hagerstown in1972. He was a member of Hagerstown Church (formerly First Baptist Church), Morris Frock American Legion Post 42, and the Isaac Walton League. Jack was an avid fisherman and hunter, always enjoying the outdoors. He also enjoyed gardening, taking care of his garden, lawn and fruit trees.

He is survived by his son, Walter Jackson (Kimberly) Smith, Jr.; grandchildren, Grant J.B. (Nicole) Smith, Cole A.B. (Lindsey) Smith; great grandchildren, Scarlett Rae Smith and Reese Jackson Smith; and sisters-in-law, Margie Smith and Ruby Sheppard.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Dorothy Alise Smith, who passed July 10, 2024; and brother, William B. Smith.

Graveside services will be held Friday, September 5, 2025, at 1:30 pm, at the Rose Hill Cemetery, 600 South Potomac Street, Hagerstown, MD, with the Pastor Joshua McClain officiating.

There will be no viewing or visitation.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 1710 Underpass Way, Suite 300, Hagerstown, MD 21740.
