Walter Benion Smith, age 80, of Crossville, Tennessee, passed away on October 9, 2025, at Cumberland Medical Center.
Benion was born on November 23, 1944, in Rockwood, Tennessee, son of the late Walter Emerson Smith and Cammie (Norris) Smith.
Walter managed a grocery store and served in the National Guard. He was an avid sports fan. Benion loved the Tennessee Vols and played softball for over 50 years. A highlight in his softball career came in 2012 when he was a member of the Crossville Senior Softball Team who went on to win the Tennessee Senior Olympics in Franklin, TN.
He is survived by wife, Barbara Gail (Harper) Smith; sons, Walter Benion Smith II (Gin Kiser Smith) and Christopher Lowell Smith; 8 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; brothers, Larry Smith (Nancy) and Joel Smith (Donna).
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Erika Caroline Smith; brothers, Jackie Smith and Robert Smith.
Memorial donations may be made to Cornerstone Baptist Church.
A Graveside service will be held on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at 3:00 PM at Green Acres Memory Gardens. We will process from Bilbrey Funeral Home at 2:30 PM to Green Acres Memory Gardens.
