Walter was a warm and friendly presence around the History Department at the University of West Georgia. He was always curious about the past. His enthusiasm for the study of history was infectious.

I met Walter the first time in 1969. He was an amazing example of what I wanted to be as a fourteen year old. He was kind, intuitive, intelligent and the epitome of weakness (strength under control).
He was a true inspiration and he will be missed!
