It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Father, Grandfather, Uncle and Friend, Walter H. Vejnoska, 94 of Pear River NY on March 14, 2025. Walter passed away peacefully, surrounded by love.
Born in Manhattan, NY Walter grew up in Queens, only leaving to serve in the US Navy for 4 years where he was a Korean War Veteran. Upon returning from the Navy, he worked as a banker in NYC's financial district until retiring in 1994. Walter loved to share stories of meeting and going to dinner with Joe DiMaggio and other Yankee greats during the many years he worked at The Bowery Savings Bank. He also fought in the Golden Gloves, which he remembered fondly. He married the love of his life, Rose Canariato, who predeceased him in 1993, and moved to the suburbs of Nanuet, NY where they raised their 2 children.
Anyone who knew Walter will always remember him with an ever-present smile on his face, kind nature, and loving heart. He made friends wherever he went and was always everyone's favorite at his small town's local establishments. But above all, Walter was a beloved and devoted family man. While raising his children, he would often be found, still in his suit and arriving straight from work, coaching his daughter's softball team or serving as his son's Cub Scout Leader. He loved taking annual vacations with a big group of family and friends to Wildwood Crest NJ, Ocean City MD, and Myrtle Beach SC, where he was the Dad riding roller coasters and frolicking in the pool with all the kids. With his lifelong friends, he enjoyed countless adventures, cruises and get-togethers. After retiring, he joined the Clarkstown Senior Citizen's Club, where he once again became everyone's favorite, enjoying many years there. Walter always looked forward to trips to Atlantic City with his daughter, Mia where, well into his 90's, he would often out-last the other players at the table. He also traveled the world and told everyone he came across to "enjoy life", which he did every day.
Walter is survived by his daughter, Mia (Jimmy) and son, Jay (Maureen), his grandchildren Katie, Mike and Emma, and cherished nieces, nephews and a great-niece and nephew. He will be sorely missed by all whose lives he touched so profoundly.
"Of all the properties which belong to honorable men, not one is so highly prized as that of character."
Visitation will be held at Joseph W. Sorce Funeral Home in West Nyack, NY on Friday, March 21 at 9am. A Funeral Mass will follow at St. Anthony's Shrine Church in Nanuet, NY at 10am with internment to follow at St. Anthony's cemetery. I worked with Walter at the Bowery Savings Bank in the 1960´s. My fondest memories were that he, Joe Boyle, Anthony Galleno, and myself Al Bender would go to Reese Park early on a Saturday morning to play stickball, golf and then meet our girlfriends or wives and spend the day on the beach.
I spoke to Walter last year on his 94th birthday and am so sorry for your loss.
I will miss him, but will always have the fond memories of our times together
