Walter W. Witchie, Jr., 75, died Saturday, August 16, 2025, at Kavanagh House in Des Moines. A graveside service will be Friday, August 29, 2025, 2:00 PM, at Glendale Cemetery Scattering Garden in Des Moines. Following the services there will be a reception at the home of Sandra Long, 1425 NW 75th Street, in Clive Iowa.
Walt was born April 10, 1950, in Elgin, Illinois to Walter and Evelyn (Hine) Witchie Salcedo. He was educated in Illinois and in 1978 moved to Iowa to follow his love, Kathleen. Walt owned his own business, Premier Finishes, as a commercial dry wall contractor and was highly respected for the quality of his work. Walt enjoyed fishing and loved to take his grandchildren with him. He loved his "farm" and planted a massive garden. During the harvest, family and friends enjoyed the fruits of his labor with salsa and pickled beets. Walt was an avid Cubs and Bears fan. His great grandchildren provided such comfort and happiness to his life.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Sanford; children: Halli (Kent) Sanford-Ryan, Joseph (Suki) Sanford, Sandra Long; grandchildren: Kirk (Katie) Ryan, William (Hannah) Ryan, Gabriel (Justine) Sanford, Paden Sanford; great-grandchildren: Henry Ryan, Julia Ryan, Abigail Ryan, Margaret Ryan; siblings: Ed Witchie of Indiana, Michael Witchie of Illinois, Jeff Witchie of Mexico, Adam Witchie of Florida, Dan Salcedo of Illinois, and step-brother, David Kirby.
Walt was preceded in death by his parents, brother, David Witchie, son-in-law, Lonnie Long, and his beloved dog, Hogan.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Rescue League.
