Wanda Lorraine Carter, affectionately known as "Duck," was born on May 31, 1950, in
Warrenton, North Carolina, to Vera Alston Williams and Van Davis Williams. On January 9, 2026, she joined her ancestors, leaving behind a legacy defined by love, devotion, and quiet excellence.
Wanda was a woman of depth and contrast, a graceful union of poetry, music, and emotion, grounded by the strength of an analytical mind. She loved food, music, friendship, and family, and carried a deep appreciation for community and history, always curious about where she came from and how stories were passed down. Family lineage mattered deeply to her, and she treated memory itself as something sacred.
Professionally, Wanda was accomplished and widely respected. A high school graduate with professional certificates and graduate-level knowledge in her field, she built a remarkable four-decade career as a Revenue Analyst. Her work spanned three major corporations, including Warner-Lambert, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson, where she became known for her meticulous attention to detail, analytical precision, and unwavering reliability. In preparing for her homegoing, her daughter uncovered numerous certificates and awards, tangible evidence of a woman who mastered everything she touched and was deeply valued as both a teammate and a professional.
Outside of work, Wanda's love language was generosity. She was well known for her care packages, thoughtful gifts, and daily prayers and affirmations shared faithfully with those she loved. Shopping was her favorite pastime, a sport she approached with joy and flair, not for indulgence, but for the pleasure of giving to others. Her messages of encouragement and scripture became a quiet source of strength for many, arriving just when they were needed.
Wanda was not formally religious, but she was a woman of profound faith, deeply connected to God in her own personal way. You may not have seen her in church, but her faith lived in her heart, her words, and her actions. If you were in her life, you were special. She hoped for you, clapped for you, cheered for you, and shed tears for you. When Wanda loved, she loved fully and fiercely.
She is survived by her devoted daughter, Shellie A. Carter-Mungo; her beloved grandson, Herman H. Hall; and her son-in-law, Reynold "Isaac" Mungo. She is also survived by her sisters, Joyce Harrison (preceded in death by her husband, Norman) and Yolanda West, and her sister-in-law, Barbara Spruill.
Wanda was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip Carter; her parents, Van and Vera Williams; and her brothers, Larry Williams, Luis Spruill, and Van Williams.
She is lovingly remembered by her nieces and nephews: Damara Meadows (Rashan), Jessica Harrison Calderon (Obed), Kerra Williams-Kelly, Stacie Spruill, Vanna Williams, DiShaun Williams-Phillips, Jamal Williams, Jason Harrison (Danielle), Michael Findley, Michael West, and Van Williams III.
She is also survived by her beloved aunts, Celestine Fields and Noletha Taylor, along with a host of extended family members and dear friends whose love and presence were priceless to her.
Wanda leaves behind a gentle but powerful reminder to those who knew her: live fully, give generously, and cherish the present. Tomorrow is not promised. There is no someday and no as soon as, because those moments may never come. Live well. Live now.
Her legacy lives on in every prayer shared, every care package remembered, and every life she touched with intention, grace, and an unwavering heart.
With sincere gratitude, the family thanks everyone who has reached out to offer love and support during this time. Please know that flowers or donations are welcome, simply as your heart feels led. We receive every gesture in love and gratitude, and your presence, prayers, and kindness mean more than words can express, and we hold each of you close in appreciation.
