Wanda Marie Viertel McKinnon, 98, of Littlefield TX passed away peacefully from this life on Friday, May 30, 2025. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 5th, 2025, at First Baptist Church, Littlefield, TX. Pastor Tanner Wilson will officiate. A visitation will be held from 6-7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at the funeral home. Interment will follow immediately afterward at Littlefield Memorial Park.
Wanda was born April 17, 1927, in Aspermont, TX to Effie and C. G. Viertel. She was the third of four children, having 2 older brothers and a younger sister. She graduated from Aspermont High School. She continued her education, graduating from Texas Technological College in Lubbock with a degree in Home Economics.
Wanda met Billy James McKinnon on a blind date. They married on February 14, 1948. She used her home economics skills as she managed the home, raising 4 children on a farm and balancing all the things that go into being a farmer's wife.
Wanda was an avid reader, possibly reading all of the Christian fiction books in the Littlefield library, some of them twice. She was an expert seamstress, creating beautiful dresses for herself, her daughters and clothes for the whole family. She also made matching shirts for the whole family to wear on a vacation to Six Flags Over Texas. She was active in volunteering in Girl Scouts, as well as many school and church activities where her children were involved.
Wanda and Bill were proud members of the First Baptist Church in Littlefield where they taught Training Union classes to children and supported the church they loved in many ways.
Wanda's life was full of joy, kindness, and quiet wisdom that emanated from her to those around her. Her heart was focused on happily raising her family, making the home a warm, welcoming place, and being a loving wife as well as being a good, loyal friend to those in her circle of friends. She used her words sweetly and carefully. Some words that describe her are tender, encouraging, smart, inventive, resilient, and wickedly witty.
After Bill's retirement, Wanda and Bill traveled throughout the United States, staying in their RV. They had lots of adventures and made friends with people wherever they visited. Bill and Wanda loved to dance and enjoy country music. Wanda took up painting and completed a good collection of nature pictures. Wanda and Bill delighted in their grandchildren, enjoying having them out to the farm and taking them on trips in their RV.
Wanda was preceded in death by: her husband, Bill McKinnon; parents, Effie and C. G. Viertel; brothers, Clifford and Curtis Viertel; sister, Mary Lou Hall. She is survived by her children: Vicki Lou Tracy of Lubbock, TX; Judy Cyd Mathis and her husband, Steve Mathis of Marana, AZ; Ben McKinnon and his wife, Gina McKinnon of Littlefield, TX; Kim Ivan McKinnon and his wife, Melinda McKinnon of Lubbock, TX; 10 grandchildren, Casey Chance and wife Jamie of Lubbock, Texas, Ryan Mathis and wife Keeley of Mt Vernon, WA, Gini Black and husband Brad of Littlefield, Texas, Rachele Duncan and husband Kirk of Bushland, Texas, Jeff McKinnon and wife Candyce of Lubbock, Texas, Josh McKinnon and wife Sarah of Lubbock, Texas, Katelyn McKinnon of Denver, CO, Joseph McKinnon of Denver, CO, Chelsea Todd and husband Kory of Shallowater, Texas, and Courtney Bingham of Abilene, Texas; and 14 great grandchildren.
Wanda was a great model of inner strength, tenderness, and how to always be kind. Her memory will forever live on in the hearts of her family members.
