Wanda Cheek Owens

Mrs. Wanda Earline Cheek Owens, 89, resident of Greensboro, died December 26, 2025 at Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.

She was born February 15, 1936 in Elkin, NC, a daughter to Robert W. and Hessie Mae Deal Cheek. Growing up on the family farm, Wanda learned the value of hard work at an early age. She later entered the textile industry and retired from Adams-Millis Hosiery after 30 years of service. Wanda was a former member of Fairmont Park Baptist Church in High Point and was a lifelong avid reader. On December 17, 1961, she married Melvin Griggs Owens, Jr. who preceded her in death in 2013; as well as six siblings.

Surviving is her daughter, Deborah Hopson (Gary) of Greensboro; two grandchildren, Darren L. Surratt (Abby) and Brian B. Surratt; five great grandchildren, Madison Westbrooks (C.J. Bracey), Dakota Surratt (Carmen Arroyo), Carter Surratt, Lola Surratt and Elijah "Eli" Surratt; two great-great grandchildren, Lily Grace Surratt-Arroyo and Waylon Keith Bracey; and one sister, Phyllis Cothren of West Columbia, South Carolina.

Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 30, in the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point with Rev. Dr. Sonya A. Laws officiating. A private interment will be held at Floral Garden Park Cemetery later in January.
