Wanda R. Poehls

Wanda R. Poehls, 80, died August 13, 2025, under care of HIA Hospice.

Wanda Renee Nelson was born February 13, 1945, to Melvin and Olga (Grimley) Nelson. She grew up on a farm south of Moorhead, MN.

She attended school at Rustad MN until the school was closed and then went to schools in Moorhead, graduating from Moorhead High School in 1963.

She married Daniel J. Evert in 1964, and they made their home in Sabin, MN. They raised two sons, Bruce Evert and Rick Evert.

In the early years she worked at the Fargo Clinic (now Sanford), Independent School District #152 (now Moorhead school district) and for the City of Sabin. She started her life’s mission by working at Hospice of the Red River Valley in many positions from 1986 until November 2013. She then joined the office staff at Elim Care Center and Pioneer House Assisted Living.

She married Jerome “Shorty” Poehls January 30, 1993 and they made their home in Moorhead. They enjoyed traveling and spending time at Lake Melissa with family and friends. She especially enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren and attending their games and concerts. She also enjoyed the time spent with their great-grandchildren.

Wanda would like to be remembered for being dependable and trustworthy with a positive outlook and a faith in God who guided her journey.

She is survived by her children, Bruce (Kate) Evert and Rick (Erica) Evert; step-children, Julie (Myron) Curry, Connie (Gary) Hoffman and Jeff (Joanne) Poehls; grandchildren, Victoria (Brady) Hopkins, John (Angelica) Eschenbrenner, Daniel Evert, Kayla (Grady) Stillwell, Travis (Victoria) Evert, Colton Evert, Carleigh Evert, Ashley (Evan) Boehm, Cody (Jory Mullen) Curry, Jordan (Isabella) Poehls, Ryan (Quinn) Poehls, Blake Poehls, Derek Poehls and Casey Hoffman; great-grandchildren, Waylon Andersen, Levi Andersen, Bryan Hinman, Vanessa Sanders, Matthew Eschenbrenner, Emma Hopkins, Oliver Hopkins, Alexzander Evert, Hazel Evert, Owen Stillwell, Charli Boehm and Dawson Boehm; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Nelson and Mary Wiegand, and several nieces and nephews. She will be sadly missed by her faithful dog (and protector) Buddy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Olga Nelson; brother, Dean Nelson; sister-in-law, Katie Sams and husband, Jerome Poehls.

 Visitation will be Tuesday, August 19, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, at Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, MN. The funeral service will be Wednesday, August 20,2025, at 11:00 AM, with visitation for one hour before the service, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Moorhead, MN. Interment will be at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Sabin, MN.
