Wanda Preuss Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Chas. Verheyden, Inc. Funeral Home & Cremation Service - Detroit on Dec. 17, 2025.
Wanda Louise Preuss, age 86, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2025, in Shelby Township, Michigan. Wanda was born on August 4, 1939 to parents William and Isabel ("Izzy" Fornerette) Kohlbatz, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Wanda was a proud native of the legendary and vibrant 7th Ward neighborhood; the birthplace of Jazz and the same neighborhood where current Pope Leo XIV's grandparents also lived. Wanda's life journey was a testament to her kindness and her unwavering Catholic faith that was instilled in her as a child. A cherished child and accomplished woman, her presence and light brought immense joy to her family and all those who knew her.
Wanda's commitment to her family was the cornerstone of her life. She shared a beautiful and enduring love with her husband Robert, until his passing on December 8, 2023. They married on December 27, 1965, and together they raised a family of three remarkable sons: Charles (ShuWei) Vincent Preuss, Matthew Douglas Preuss, and Richard William (D'Zarea) Preuss. Wanda's legacy continues through her four adoring grandchildren: Anastasia, Isabella, Richard ("Richie"), and Reign.
Wanda's hunger for knowledge led her to earn a Bachelor's degree from Xavier University of Louisiana in 1962. Continuing her education, she obtained a Master's Degree in Social Work from Wayne State University in 1964. Her education and career reflected her deep-rooted passion for helping others. Rather than a mere profession, she viewed her work as a calling, through which she touched the lives of countless children at Detroit Public Schools. After working over 42 years, she retired from the Detroit Federation of Teachers Union (DFT) in 2008. She served steadfastly with empathy and compassion.
Wanda's zest for life also was evident in her love for travel. She explored the world; from the tropical shores of Hawaii to the historical streets of Great Britain, the lively markets of Singapore, the picturesque tulip fields of Amsterdam, and the familiar music-filled corners of her birthplace, the one and only New Orleans. Each journey was a story, a collection of memories that she treasured and often captured in her scrapbooks.
An accomplished hostess, Wanda found joy in bringing people together, whether it was through her thoughtfully prepared meals or the festive parties she loved to organize. Her home was a hub of warmth and celebration, where friends and family gathered, drawn by her infectious spirit and gracious hospitality. An avid gardener, Wanda's passion for flowers was akin to her own life-a vibrant array of moments, each one nurtured with love and care. Her flowers were a testament to God's abundance, her patience, and the beauty she cultivated in both her plants and her relationships.
Wanda was preceeded in death by her siblings Frieda (Lucien) Smith, Carol (Bubba) Carroll, and Linda Kohlbatz. Wanda is survived by her sister Diane (Ernie) Sinkovits. The middle child of five, she filled a unique role, gently offering guidance and selfless love to her younger and older sisters. Each of her sisters knew Wanda as one who always extended her warmth and support.
Wanda's other surviving relatives are: Jeanette (Brian) Tancock, Yvonne Watts, Yvette (Kenneth) Monette, Louise Kohlbatz, Catherine (Johnnie) Smith, Charles (Jessica) Kohlbatz, Christine Carroll, Patricia (Derrick) Thomas, Jennifer (Robert) Montjoy, Gerald Smith, Grace Nelder, Charles Ross, Rochelle Ross, Anne Clark, and dozens of cousins. Her entire family mourns her passing and will honor her precious memory.
A Funeral Mass for Wanda Louise Preuss will be held on Saturday, December 27, 2025 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 1491 Baldwin Street in Detroit. Wanda will lie in repose from 10:00 a.m until the start of the Mass at 11:00 a.m. Interment follows at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Detroit.
