Wanda Roth Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home - Erie on Dec. 31, 2025.
Wanda Szymanowicz Roth, 94, of Erie, passed away on Saturday, December 27, 2025, at NHC Farragut in Knoxville, TN. She was born in Erie on November 20, 1931, daughter of the late Leo and Helen Bednarowicz Szymanowicz. Wanda was married to Donald, the love of her life, on April 14, 1951, and they lived a beautiful 72 years together.
Wanda was a 1949 graduate of Academy High School and attended Alliance College. After college, she worked for Bliley Electric and was the office manager for her family business at the Glass House Inn. Most importantly, she was a wife, an exceptional homemaker, and mother of three incredibly grateful children.
Wanda was a founding member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church where she humbly served as a Eucharistic Minister for many years. She was also a member of the Ladies Guild, Erie Maennerchor Club, and Lawrence Park Golf Club. She enjoyed dancing with Don, playing golf, crafts, pottery, and curling. One of her greatest loves was planning dinner parties for their friends and family. She was the perfect hostess and loved serving people. Wanda loved her Lord and her Church, always lived life to its fullest and had such a positive attitude. Many people were in awe of the true love connection that Wanda and Don had. Their love for each other was a great example to anyone who had the honor and pleasure of knowing them.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald J. Roth and her brothers, Dr. Leon Sims and Joseph Szymanowicz.
She is survived by her son, Michael Roth (Denise) of South Carolina; her daughters, Diane Vickers (Barry) of Conneaut Lake and Lynn Wigren (Richard) of Knoxville, TN; eight grandchildren, Amanda Poole (Dr. Brad), Michael Roth (Kelly), Tom Mahovsky, Rebecca Mahovsky, Julie Cecil (Dr. Andrew), Angie Harris (Andrew), Adam Wigren (Kendall), and Carly Wigren; nine great-grandchildren, Madilyn, Mia, Jacob, Brennan, Kyle, Ainsley, Alex, Paxton and Carter; her sisters-in-law, Jeanne Sims and Fran Szymanowicz, and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Funeral services and inurnment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Funeral arrangements were made by the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., Erie, 16504.
Memorial contributions can be made to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 1553 E Grandview Blvd, Erie, PA 16510.

My heart aches to read this news. So many great memories and salon visits I have had with Don and Wanda doing their hair over the years. They were definitely a rare couple that did absolutely everything together and a great example of what life should be like. My deepest sympathies go out to the family as you navigate this difficult time. I looked forward to her weekly visit to the salon and have missed her dearly. She will forever be in my heart.

I have many wonderful memories of both Wanda and Don from my time at OLMC! From daily Mass, protecting from voracious deer the tulips from Holland that they planted, attending some of those great dinners at the house, Don, on his knee protectors, weeding the church flowers, and so many more. My Mass this Sunday will be offered for Wanda and Don. May they rest in peace. We'll done, good and faithful servants!
