Jonathan R. Spitzer

Jonathan R. Spitzer, age 85 passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2026 at the Erie VA Hospice Center. Born January 28, 1940 in New York City, he was the son of the late Nathan and Marie (Kern) Spitzer.

Raised in Erie, he was a 1957 graduate of Cathedral Prep, college educated and saw military service in Naval Aviation. He then devoted his working years in Ft. Lauderdale and Jacksonville Florida to entrepreneurial venues until retirement, some of which included owning an airline charter company, aviation instruction, general contracting specializing in Kitchen and Bath Design and Remodeling.

An avid hunter, fisherman, boater and pilot, some of his many hobbies included restoration of boats, vintage cars and airplanes. He loved spending time on the water with his family and friends, fishing, relaxing and traveling to the islands. He also had a great love of food, cooking and horticulture.

In addition to his parents, "Jon" was preceded in death by a daughter, Sarah Spitzer- Erickson.

He is survived by his daughter Norah Spitzer-Thornton, her husband James Thornton and three grandsons, Jacob Spitzer, Kash and Ethan Erickson.

An extraordinary man and loving father and husband, he will always be cherished and forever remain in our hearts and memories.

The family extends a heartfelt thanks to the entire staff at Erie VA Hospice for their exemplary care and compassion.

Future interment will be in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery in Spring/Summer 2026. Arrangements are being handled by Brugger Funeral home and Crematory.
