Ward Joseph Donnelly, Jr., 92, of San Mateo, California, passed away on November 16, 2025.
Ward was born in San Francisco to Ward and Iona Donnelly and was the oldest of four children. He was preceded in death by his siblings John Donnelly, James Donnelly, and Dolores Scholz.
Ward proudly served his country with two years in the United States Army before beginning what became a remarkable 66-year career as a successful businessman with Farmers Insurance Group. His dedication, integrity, and warmth left a lasting impact on colleagues, clients, and his community.
He was also deeply involved in civic life. Ward was active in the Geneva Mission Business Association and a committed member of the Geneva-Excelsior Lions Club, where he served honorably as president. His leadership and community spirit reflected his lifelong commitment to service.
Ward will be fondly remembered for his humor, playful spirit, and silly antics-qualities that earned him the cherished nickname "Crazy G" from his grandchildren. He was an avid reader, especially of history, and a passionate sports fan. From coaching his children's teams, to never missing their games, to cheering on his beloved San Francisco Giants and San Francisco 49ers, Ward found joy in every moment of sport, family, and community.
He also loved the outdoors, spending countless hours walking and hiking through Truckee and California's beautiful parks, appreciating both their natural beauty and their history.
Ward is survived by his wife, Diane, and his children: Ward J. Donnelly III (Christine), Diane Donnelly Tester (Randy), and Carrie Sambel (Arnie). He is also survived by his grandchildren: Arnie Sambel II, Katie Donnelly, Ryan Sambel, Shea Donnelly, and Marina Sambel.
He will be remembered for his devotion to family, his kindness, his humor, and his lifelong dedication to community, learning, and the world around him. Visitation will be at 2pm followed by a Funeral Mass at 2:30pm on Friday, November 21st at St. Gregory Church, San Mateo. Reception immediately following at the San Mateo Elks Lodge.
