Ward Edwards Obituary
Julian Ward Edwards, a pillar of the community of Butler, Georgia, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2024. He was 94 years old. His dedication to serving others and fostering unity leaves an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Ward was born on February 28, 1930, in Howard, Georgia. His father and grandfather built a bonfire so big the night of his birth that people in Butler claimed to have seen it. He attended the University of Georgia where he played trumpet in the Red Coat Marching Band. A graduate of John A. Gupton College of Mortuary Science and Sargent in the United States Air Force.
He was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1966 and retired after 26 years of service. During his time under the Gold Dome, he was elected to many positions including Majority Whip and Majority Caucus Secretary. He served on the Policy, Educational and Governmental Affairs Committees. Was Vice Chairman of the Interstate Cooperation Committee and Secretary of the Rules Committee. He was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1972 and 1980. In the 90s he was tapped to join the Gridiron Secret Society at the University of Georgia, one the highest honors a male student/alum may receive.
After retiring from the General Assembly, Ward was elected by his peers in the Legislature to the Georgia Department of Transportation Board. He served several years, was elected Vice Chair, and brought many transportation improvements to the middle Georgia area.
Along with his brother, he owned and operated Edwards Funeral Home through the early 1980s. In the 1970s he and his wife Billie bought a chain of T-Shirt shops in the infancy of iron on decals. They operated three stores in Atlanta, one in Macon and one in Columbus. He was very creative enjoying building birdhouses displayed throughout Table Top and painting signs.
Ward married Billie Salmon in 1956 and shared 64 wonderful years together until her passing in 2020. He is survived by one daughter, Hallie Ward Edwards, brother Sonny Edwards, sister Charlotte Hawkins, one niece and three nephews.
Honorary Pallbearers are Don Edwards, Rustin Edwards, Stuart Whatley, Scott Kyle, Taylor Smith, Steven Smith and Leon Spillers.
Ward was a kind man who loved his community, state and country. A graveside service will be held at Butler Memorial Cemetery Wednesday, March 27th at 11am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Taylor Emergency Medical Services located at 22 E. Main Street, Butler, Georgia.

I served with Ward in the Georgia House toward the end of his time there. He was always gracious and kind to me, even at times when it was unpopular to do so. And of course I was a friend of Hallie, and would love to talk with her. McP
