Warren Ernest Smith, III, 95, of Conneaut Lake passed away peacefully on September 21, 2024 at Meadville Medical Center. He was born in Meadville on September 5, 1929, the son of Warren E. Smith, Jr. and Edythe E. McMullen. He was married to Mary Ann Palka, also of Meadville on April 27, 1953 in San Antonio and the couple celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary earlier this year. Warren was a graduate of Meadville High School (1947) and Allegheny College (1951) and held master's degrees from Edinboro State College (1965) and the University of Portland (1971).
Warren served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954 before beginning a 38-year career in teaching high school physics and chemistry in Greenville, OH and at Conneaut Lake Area High School. He touched lives of hundreds of students, many who still recall learning science in his classroom. He was a member of the Crawford County Historical Society, the National Rifle Association, the Meadville Sportsmans Club, and was a past master of Meadville's Masonic Lodge 234. He was also active in the Conneaut Lake Historical Society and the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Smith, sister, Carol L. Cares, son, Warren A. Smith (Susan), daughters Anita A. Smith-Mckim (Mike) and Susan E. Smith (Cindy), granddaughter Madelyne G. Smith, and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death was his sister, Marilyn E. Smith.
Family and friends are invited to call from 4:00-6:00 pm on Thursday, September 26, 2024 at Rose and Waid Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 12422 Conneaut Lake Road, Conneaut Lake, and again on Friday, September 27, 2024 from 10:00 am until the time of service at 11:00 am with Rev. Les Hutchins, Pastor of Fallowfield United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will occur privately at Greendale Cemetery, Meadville, at a later date.
