Wathena Hogan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home & Crematory - DeLand on Nov. 6, 2025.

Publish in a newspaper

Wathena Elmae Moremen Hogan was born in DeLand, Florida, and attended Mainland High School, where she met and married her high school sweetheart, Herschel Hogan. The two shared a marriage that lasted over fifty years until Herschel's passing in 2010.
For more than five decades, Wathena lived off Orange Camp on Alanson Drive, a road named after her grandfather, who once owned and farmed 80 acres of land now known as Echo Hills.
Over the years, her parents, Carter and Ruby Moremen, built a home nearby on that same land, as did her brother, Bill Moremen.
During her childhood in Daytona, Wathena spent much of her time helping her mother care for her younger brothers, Samuel "Sam" Moremen, Billy Moremen, George Moremen, and Jeff. Those were wonderful years when Daytona still had a small-town feel, filled with long walks, bike rides to the beach, and sporting events with family and friends.
When Wathena married Herschel, the Moremen and Hogan families became one big, close-knit family, with many of them standing out as athletes in the Daytona area. Although Wathena was one of the few girls in the bunch, she was strong enough to keep everyone in line when needed.
Together, Wathena and Herschel raised three sons: David Hogan, wife Lily, grandson Lee, and granddaughter Amber; Bobby Hogan, wife Debbie; Ric Hogan, wife Nikki, and granddaughter Taylor.
She devoted herself fully to her family, tirelessly shuttling the boys to football, baseball, and soccer practices, as well as weekend surfing trips to the beach. Any free time she had from being a wonderful wife and mother was spent outdoors tending to her ten acres of land, planting, weeding, cutting, and hauling debris to the burn pile.
Wathena loved the outdoors but loved her family even more. Most weekends were spent surrounded by the Moremen-Hogan clan, enjoying meals, playing football, and taking hayrides behind her dad's old tractor. She also had a lifelong love for fishing, both offshore and on her family's property in Eldora on the Mosquito Lagoon, where she enjoyed catching trout and redfish.
Always an early riser, she loved her mornings, sitting outside before sunrise, sipping coffee, and enjoying the peace of her beautiful surroundings while planning out her day.
Wathena will be dearly missed but remembered always as a kind, sweet, and loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and friend. Each of us carries special memories of her that we can share and cherish in her honor. She was predeceased by her parents, Carter and Ruby Moremen; her brother, Bill Moremen; her husband, Herschel Hogan; and her son, David Hogan.
Funeral services will be held at Allen Summerhill Funeral Home at 10:30am Wednesday November 12th. 126 East New York Avenue DeLand, FL.
