Mary Rose Crazy Thunder-Dillon, Wayankapi Win (See Her) and Tibloku Ota Win (Many Older Brothers), made her journey to the Spirit World on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at the Monument Health Hospital in Rapid City, South Dakota, surrounded by her loved ones.
Mary Rose was born on September 20, 1935, in Hisle, South Dakota, to Emma (Black Hawk) Brave Hawk and Louis Crazy Thunder, later raised by her stepfather, Ben Brave Hawk. She was a proud member of the Oglala Lakota Nation and a fluent Lakota speaker.
She attended Holy Rosary Mission (now known as Mahpiya Luta), where she began a lifelong path of learning and service. After graduating, she continued her education at Aberdeen Secretarial School and went on to work as a Secretary at the OST Tribal Presidents Office from 1975-1976. Her dedication to her community extended through her years as a Dietitian and Cook for Martin Headstart and as a Kindergarten Aide with the Bennett County Foster Grandparent Program, where she continued to nurture and care for generations of children. She officially retired at the age of 80.
Mary Rose was also known for her creative spirit and craftsmanship. A master seamstress and lifelong star quilt maker, her quilts are cherished gifts that wrapped family and friends in love and protection. She also competed in the Miss Indian America Contest in her youth, a testament to her grace and presence.
Her love of the community was evident in her many First Place ribbons at the Bennett County Fair and the LaCreek Best Lawn Awards she received over the years. Mary Rose was a member of the Episcopal Church and practiced traditional Lakota spirituality demonstrated through generosity and kindness.
She will be remembered for her love of cooking, gardening, sewing, and steadfast love for her family. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose caring spirit touched all who knew her.
Mary Rose is survived by her children, Debra (Steve) Eagle Heart-Johnson, Emmaline Eagle Heart, Janet Eagle Heart, Wayne (Robin) Lamb, Isaac (Erin) Red Bear; her sister, Caroline Cordell; grandchildren, Sarah Eagle Heart, Emma Eagle Heart-White, Troy Weber, Jason Red Bear, Jeremy Red Bear, Brandon Red Bear, Kevin Eagle Heart, Chris Red Bear, David Red Bear, Quentin Red Bear, Cante Skuya Red Bear, Shauna Atkins, Sharon Jones, Alyssa Red Bear, Maryssa Red Bear, and Howard Red Bear II; Great-grandchildren, Aarron Cuny, Brenden Cuny, Gavin White, Elise White, Josalyn White, Jaecy Jones, Clifford Jones, Caske Eagle Heart, Bryson Atkins, Bracen Atkins, Rilyn Leftwich, Rhys Leftwich, Tori Weber, EmmaRae Weber, Gwyneth Weber; her family will carry her love and teachings forward.
Mary Rose is preceded in death by her parents; her children, Mabel Eagle Heart and Howard Red Bear; her sister, Crystal Brown; her grandson, Jason Two Eagle; granddaughter, Erica Red Bear.
Mary Rose will be deeply missed and forever remembered for her strength, spirituality, and the warmth she shared with her family and community. Her spirit will continue to guide her loved ones they honor her life and the legacy she leaves behind.
Pallbearers will be Troy Weber, Kevin Eagle Heart, Chris Red Bear, Quentin Red Bear, David Red Bear, Jason Red Bear, Brandon Red Bear, Jeremy Red Bear, Howard Red Bear II, Aarron Cuny, Brenden Cuny, Gavin White, Jamie Lamb, Ethan Lamb
Wake Services: One night wake service will start at 5:00 PM, Friday, October 31, 2025 at the Martin Activity Center, in Martin, SD with evening services starting at 7:00 PM.
Funeral Services: 10:00 AM, Saturday, November 01, 2025 at the Martin Activity Center, in Martin, SD.
Officiating: The Rev. Michelle Dayton
