Wayburn Wandell McLane, 93, of North Liberty, Iowa, died peacefully on Tuesday, February 17, 2026.
A private family viewing was held at Lensing Funeral Home, Iowa City, Iowa. Graveside services will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, in Highland Park Cemetery in Borger, Texas under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger, Texas. In lieu of flowers his memory may be honored with a gift Care Initiatives Hospice, 3720 Queen Court SW Ste. #9, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 52404, please place Wayburn’s in the memo of your check.
Wayburn was born June 17, 1932, in Ralls, Texas to John Lesley “Johnny” McLane and Roberta Abby “Bobbie” Fosea McLane. He married Dora Jane Garcia on August 29, 1959, in Borger, Texas. Before he retired Wayburn worked at Rockwall Collins in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Wayburn proudly honorably as a Corporal in the United States Army from August 14, 1949, until August 3, 1953, serving in the Korean War. He described himself as being seventeen and fresh off the farm when he went to California for Basic Training. Wayburn attended Medical Technician training eventually performing routine testing in a medical and hospital laboratories to obtain data needed by doctors to diagnose and treat patients which is just one of the many duties a medical technician does. He also served as a Dental Assistant at the KMAG Dispensary. The service rendered was truly appreciated by the Dental Corps. Wayburn shared his memory of his first day in Korea as "a cold day and they handed him his rifle and sent him north" and that was the last time he carried a gun while he was there. He was sent to an advisory group in Korea to train Koreans. In Korea he was given a choice of taking strike or going home and he chose to return home. Wayburn earned the following honors: Korean Service Medal with 1 Bronze Star Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Johnny and Bobbie McLane; wife, Dora McLane; daughter, Patricia Miller; grandson, Clinton Dunn; sister, Colista Hancock; and brothers, Lesley McLane and James McLane.
Survivors include his daughter, Carmen Dunn and husband Robert of North Liberty, Iowa; son, Rodger McLane and wife Brenda of Carthage, Texas; stepdaughter, Gina Shelton of Borger, Frances Gray of Coralville, Iowa; grandchildren, April People and husband Matt, Brandi Kelley and husband Shane, Laci Fensom and husband Brent, Judge Rodger Glen McLane; great grandchildren, Landon Peoples, Maxwell Dunn, Brenton Fensom, Alyssa Fensom, Courtlyn Fensom; one great great grandson, Colter Mize; and numerous nieces and nephews.
