Obituary for Waymon Harold Sims, Sr. Also lovingly known as "Big Papaw"
Waymon Harold Sims, Sr., age 93, of
West Monroe, Louisiana, went home to be with the Lord surrounded by family. He was born in Choudrant, Louisiana, and spent his life as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather.
Waymon was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 70 years, Dorothy Sims, who passed away earlier this year, as well as his parents and five brothers. He is survived by his son, Waymon H. "Perk" Sims, Jr., and his wife, Debbie Sims; grandchildren, Sarah Brown and her husband Jeff, and Katie May and her husband David; great-grandchildren, David Brown and his wife Faithe, Payson Sanford, Cyndal Crow, Harrison May, Teller May, and Sims May; and one great-great-grandchild, Rowan Brown. He is also lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews who were dear to him.
Waymon proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1952 until 1954, before beginning a long and dedicated career with the United States Postal Service, where he retired as a Special Delivery Driver. A man who never sat still for long, he could always be found outside tinkering with tractors, lawnmowers, or anything else that needed fixing. His bustling trailer rental business became a well-known landmark on Wallace Dean Road - a place where everyone knew they could find Waymon with a story, a laugh, or a helping hand. He was also a fixture at garage sales and auctions, always on the hunt for a good "cheap" deal that brought him just as much joy as the treasure itself.
He was a faithful member of Good Hope Baptist Church and a man of strong faith and quiet wisdom. He brought joy and humor wherever he went - always answering "terrible" when asked how he was doing, and jokingly insisting that gifts be exchanged for cash. He liked to say his "home office" was in "Chicargo," a favorite saying that will always bring a smile to those who loved him.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the caring staff at Amera Health and to the hospice team at Caring Hands for their kindness and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fairpark Baptist Church at Good Hope Campus in
West Monroe, Louisiana, in honor of Waymon's life.
Honoring Waymon as pallbearers will be David Brown, Harrison May, Payson Sanford, David May, Jeff Brown, Brian Crow, and Ricky Sims. Honorary pallbearers are Tommy Walpole and Sam Roberson.
