A visitation for Wayne Abernathy, 79, of Wills Point is scheduled for Wednesday, September 20, 2022, from 6:00-8:00 pm at Hiett's LyBrand Funeral Home. A graveside gathering will take place at the Schlobohm family cemetery outside Houston.
Wayne passed away on Sunday, September 18, 2022.
Wayne Ray Abernathy was born on December 17, 1942, in Houston, TX, to parents Ray Clarence Abernathy and Beatrice Elvira Schlobohm Abernathy. He was raised in Humble, TX, moved to Balch Springs during high school, and graduated from Mesquite High School in 1961. Wayne served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1961-1965, most of his time spent on aircraft carrier USS Yorktown.
After graduating from college at University of Texas at Arlington, he worked as an electronics technician until he retired in 2001. He had 2 children, Kerri and Derek, with his first wife, Cher Jones. He loved watching sports, talking history, and spending time with family. Nothing gave him more pleasure in life than having family nearby.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Elvira Abernathy, sisters Sue Culpepper and Dolores Blackmore, and his brother Kenneth Abernathy, as well as the mother of his children Cher Jones.
Wayne is survived by his brother Don Abernathy, daughter Kerri Abernathy and son Derek Abernathy, Derek's girlfriend Gina, who has been by his side through the last months, grandsons Owen Abernathy and Dylan Abernathy, and granddaughters Meagan Abernathy and Katy Raynes.
Wayne will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him. He was a generous and steadfast part of the lives that he touched. The family would like to express our gratitude and appreciation for your love and support at this difficult time.
We would like to invite you to our family home at 215 Bull Durham Road in Wills Point after the visitation for an informal gathering of friends and loved ones.
