Frank E. Smith Funeral Home and Crematory - LancasterWayne Babbs, 87, died Thursday, November 20, 2025 at the Fairfield Medical Center.
Wayne was born in Thornville, OH on Apr 23, 1938. Growing up on a farm with 6 siblings, Wayne embraced the values of hard work. While living on the farm, he also worked as a laborer for a commercial roofing company in Columbus. He was the last surviving male member of his graduating class from Thornville High School, a testament to his resilience. He has survived his siblings.
Wayne was drafted in the U.S Army and served for two years, being stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He served as company clerk, rose to the rank of Specialist 4, and was honorably discharged.
Wayne's professional journey spanned several years, as he pursued various endeavors. He worked as a traveling auto parts salesman for the Diemand Corporation in northern Ohio, he worked at the NAPA auto parts store in Lancaster, and he worked at the Premix factory in Lancaster. Wayne owned the former Sunoco station at Sixth & Broad in the late 60s/early 70s,(current Kroger's gas station).
In his personal life, Wayne was a devoted fan of the Cincinnati Reds and found joy in the camaraderie of playing poker with his friends.
Wayne is survived by his son Beau Babbs (daughter-in-law Lina); grandchildren Cody, Kyle, David, Leo Noah, and great-grandchildren: Oaklynn, Iris, Alice, Elena, and Troy. He also has many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Monday, December 1, 2025 at the Frank E. Smith Funeral Home, 405 N. Columbus St. Lancaster, OH, at 12 noon. Family and friends may visit 1 hour prior to the service, 11:00 AM. A private burial will take place in Floral Hills Memory Gardens at a later date.
