Wayne Michael Brittain

January 8, 1939 - December 22, 2025

Wayne Michael Brittain of Towson, Maryland, 86, beloved husband of Sandra Brittain for 63 years, passed away suddenly on December 22.

Wayne was born on January 8, 1939 in Valdese, North Carolina. He earned a bachelor's degree in nuclear engineering from NC State and a master's degree in physics from Drexel University. Wayne worked as a nuclear engineer for Martin Marietta, which later became Teledyne Energy Systems. After 39 years, he retired; however, he continued to work for the company as a consultant several days a week into his late 70s, valued for his inventive thinking, historical knowledge, and extensive experience, including work on the original Mars Viking Landers and the recent Curiosity

Rover.

Wayne was a high school athlete, playing baseball, basketball, and football. He was an avid sports fan, cheering on both college and professional teams, especially the NC State Wolfpack, the Orioles, and the Ravens. He loved working on cars, and his pet project for many years was restoring an old Jaguar. Wayne was an electronics and computer guru, always happy to troubleshoot problems and to put together computer systems for family and friends. He will be remembered for his devotion to his wife and family, his brilliant mind, his sense of humor, his love of music, and his ability to creatively figure out innovative fixes for any car problem, home repair, or technology issue.

He is survived by his daughters, Lisa (Sean) Potochney, Meredith (William Fagan) Brittain, and Julie (Benjamin) Perry, and his grandchildren, Brian and Amy Potochney, Claire Fagan, and Colin Perry. He is also survived by his brother, Mark (Beth) Brittain. He was predeceased by his parents, Ned and Margaret Brittain, and his sister, Margaret Gail (Carl) Gray.

Family and friends may call at the Mitchell-Wiedefeld Funeral Home, 6500 York Road, Baltimore, Maryland 21212, on Monday, December 29th from 11 a.m. to noon. A funeral service will follow at noon. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice in his name.

I believe I had met Wayne one time, so I didn´t know him personally. But, you can tell many things about a person via the legacy they leave behind. I had the great pleasure of working with his daughter, Lisa, at BG&E. From his resume, I could tell he had a part in raising a very professional and accomplished woman.

Having been at a funeral earlier today, we always think that if only there could have been one more day...now, in those days ahead, Wayne will live on via the many joyous memories and stories told that relive his life and interactions with all of his family.
My deepest regards,
Jim Thurber

Sandra, I was so sorry to hear of Wayne's passing. We did a lot of things together back in our early years in Morganton and MHS. I have great memories of those days. My heartfelt condolences to you and all who knew and loved Wayne. Again, I am so sorry. Ronnie Williams
