Wayne Gaylin Obituary

Wayne LeRoy Gaylin passed away peacefully at home after a short battle with cancer at the age of 88. Wayne is survived by his wife, Quanah, daughter Treena Bottaro (Greg); granddaughters, Tawny Morton (Phil), Gina Palatka (Sean), step granddaughter Jennie Severson (Derek); great-grandson Treven Palatka, step great-grandsons Brayden Severson, Colby Severson and great-great granddaughter Cora Severson. Wayne was preceded in death by his son, Rick and siblings Clifford Gaylin Jr, LaVern Gaylin and Lynette Middleton. He was born July 24, 1937 in Vancouver, WA, to Evelyn and Clifford Gaylin. He graduated from Parkrose High School in 1955 and married his high school sweetheart, Quanah Cropper, in July of 1956. Wayne entered the Coast Guard right out of high school and was stationed first in Port Angeles, WA, where he and Quanah had two children, then stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii, and celebrated it becoming the "50th" state while residing there. After 5 years in the service Wayne and his family returned to Portland where Wayne first worked in Sales for a short time but then took the position of Assistant Manager for the Bell Telephone Employees Credit Union of Oregon. He later took a Manager position at Santel Credit Union in San Diego, CA, where he worked for 9 years in the 1970's. He then returned to Portland to become CEO of Telco Credit Union of Oregon (now Unitus) until his retirement in 2004. Wayne and Quanah moved to Arizona to take advantage of great winter weather in their retirement and met a fabulous group of fellow retirees in their neighborhood. Wayne enjoyed 5 days of golf a week, a little gambling at the casinos and lots and lots of travel. They enjoyed many cruises including river cruises in Europe, and a trip to China and Australia as well. They also formed a travel group with some of their friends and took a 12 passenger Van across the country 3 years in a row with couples planning destination site seeing, food and lodging. They moved back to Oregon in 2020 to be near family. Wayne will be remembered for his positive attitude and welcoming smile, and love of life. He loved all things family and friends and will be missed by us all. The family would like to thank Willamette Vital Hospice for their care and dedication. A Celebration of Life will follow in the Spring of 2026 and more info will be provided.

Wayne was one of my dad´s best friends. When Wayne was CEO of the credit union, my dad was president of the board. They enjoyed golfing together and time in Arizona up until my dad´s passing. Wayne was one of the best men I´ve ever known. Sending all my love to Quanah and the family.

I remember many years ago, when I first started dating Wayne and Quanah´s nephew, Jeff. Even though Jeff and I were incredibly young at the time (15 & 17) It meant so much to him for me to meet his Uncle Wayne and Aunt Quanah-they were incredibly important to him. Uncle Wayne and Aunt Quanah took the time to invite us to their home, and were incredibly kind and welcoming. We shared such a wonderful evening together. Now after 45 years of being in the family, I can attest that Uncle Wayne was an exceptionally kind, loving, and honorable man-someone deeply loved, greatly respected, and truly cherished. We were blessed to have him as an uncle.
Prayers and hugs to Quanah, Treena and the rest of the immediate family.

This photo of Wayne is from September just before he received his diagnosis.

There are many aspects in describing my times spent with Wayne over the years. Here are a few that immediately come to mind.
I came to know Wayne through his work at Oregon Telco Credit Union. He had just moved back from California. He was a highly respected CEO. During his tenure at the Credit Union, he was very involved in many important positions within our industry, including serving on the National Board for State Chartered Credit Unions and the formation of Automated Items Management (AIM).

On the charitable front Wayne was involved in the Hank and Moose golf tournament which raised funds for the Children´s Miracle Network (CMN). He participated in all credit union events supporting Doernbecher Children´s Hospital in Portland.
In the evening following our industry events we would often gather to engage in playing poker or dice. Wayne always seemed to the instigator of these pastimes. I guess it was because he often won. One time we held an annual company party for the employees of AIM where at one junction during the party Wayne was able to convert his pool table into a professional card table including chips. (He also won most of the money). He often traveled with a deck of cards or his dice to start things up.

To add to his gambling stories, Wayne won so much money from playing golf with me at one time he wanted to issue me a 1099 Statement to declare his winnings. It was always in good fun and a fun time.

Wayne introduced me to bourbon (and lots of it).

One of the activities that we always kidded Wayne about, was that on every Monday night he had to get home early for Quanah´s fried chicken. This went along with Quanah calling his local restaurant to place Wayne´s lunch order. He almost had to call Quanah while in a buffet line at Salishan once because he didn´t know if he liked mayonnaise on his sandwich.

Most of all Wayne was my friend. I have not come across many people in my life that could measure up to him. He was lots of fun, loyal, loved his family and was a great influence on many.

He will be missed.

Wayne is my father-in-law and I have many great memories with him. I was not the best handy-man but Wayne was always there with tools in hand and taught me so much. We both loved to golf and had many great rounds that always ended with his golf group, beer, collection of bets and many good laughs. Wayne was always kind to us all and made me feel welcome always; I'll miss him.

My Grandpa was the best ! He had such a kind heart and was a big part of my life . My grandpa made sure we went on amazing trips, and enjoyed making Christmas extra fun. My grandpa was the best Dad, Grandpa, husband and friend. He was always there anytime someone needed anything. I am so grateful that my son got to know his great grandpa Wayne for many years. He always showed up for his soccer games, holidays and performances. I enjoyed meeting him and grandma at breakfast some Sundays and watching his favorite game shows. I love you Grandpa so much

I could never have asked for a better dad. I was a daddy's girl from day one and remained that way through his life. He was always there for me and my family and made life so much fun. He especially loved Christmas time and Disneyland. I never could keep up with him in Disneyland or out eat him in Chocolate Covered Frozen Bananas there. I have so many wonderful memories of my dad...those memories are so special to me now and will always keep him close.....but I will still miss him everyday....
