Wayne was born on October 2, 1943, in Silver Springs, Maryland to Dale and Jean Leatherman. He was raised on a farm near Culpeper, Virginia and grew up working on the farm. When Wayne was old enough, he enlisted in the Air Force. He received his education in the Air Force and served as an aircraft mechanic. While stationed in Roswell, New Mexico, Wayne married the love of his life, Glynnda Beck, on July 15, 1966. Soon after, they welcomed their son, Allen. From 1971 to 1972, Wayne served in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1973.
After the military, Wayne moved his family to the Texas Panhandle. He worked as an equipment operator in Wheeler for a while and worked on drilling rigs for an oil company. In 1980, he and his family moved to Venezuela for work. They moved back to Texas after several months. Wayne and Glynnda wanted to grow their family, so they adopted their son, Chris. From 1990 to 1996, he worked at the Jordan Unit for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Wayne began hauling pipe in the late 1990s for Bourland and Leverich Pipe Company. Wayne loved his family dearly, and also had a special spot in his heart for his dog, Precious.
In his free time, Wayne had many hobbies to keep him busy. He often worked on old, junker cars. He would also hunt, fish, watch Westerns and old Sci-Fi movies on TV, all while drinking his coffee. Wayne was a loving, caring, and hard-working provider for his family. He was an amazing father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and will be greatly missed.
Wayne is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Glynnda; daughter, Michelle Leatherman; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ottis and Wilber Beck; sisters, Kathy Mercado and Tutti Wilson; brothers, James Hitt and Teddy Hitt; and stepfather, Amos Hitt.
He is survived by his two sons, Allen Leatherman and wife Tonya of Canyon, and Chris Leatherman and wife Wanda of Glenpool, Oklahoma; two grandchildren, Megan Mills of Canyon, and Taylor Harp of Glenpool, Oklahoma; and two great-grandchildren, Paisley Harp and Hadley Mills.
