Wayne Lee Mangels, 91 of Greenville, passed away on Monday, February 3, 2025.
Born in Fontanelle, Iowa, Wayne was a son of the late Herman M. Mangels and Gertrude D. Tiedeman Mangels Clayton.
On December 27, 1958, Wayne and Shirley J. Gruber were united in marriage at the Lutheran Church in Fontanelle, IA.
After growing up on a farm in Iowa, Wayne proudly served two years in the US Army. He then went on to enjoy a successful 33-year marketing career in the paper industry. After retirement, he went on to be a much-respected consultant in the industry.
Knowing the importance of education, Wayne graduated from Drake University with a bachelor's degree in marketing and economics. He then earned his masters degree from Western Michigan University. Wayne also found much pride in helping each of his daughters earn their college and advanced degrees.
Wayne loved spending time with his family, especially his three grandsons. He also enjoyed playing tennis with his wife Shirley, playing golf, volunteering for charities and traveling the world, especially when World War II battlefields could be included. Wayne could also be found cheering on his favorite football and basketball teams.
His faith was very important to him, and he was very active in his churches over the years. Wayne graciously served as usher, chairman of many committees and as the Vice President and President of the congregation. He was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Greenville South Carolina.
Remaining to cherish his memory are his daughters, Susan Mangels of Chicago, Il and Stephanie Mangels Watson of Ball Ground, GA; three grandsons, Nicholas, Samuel, and Matthew Watson; sister and brother- in-law, Sandra and Loyd Fleming of Omaha NE; sister-in-law, Marlene McVay of Tustin, CA; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by his loving wife, Shirley; youngest daughter, Jennifer; and his brothers, Glen and Leo Mangels.
Visitation will be held at 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 9, 2025 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes, Downtown. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 10, 2025 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Susan J. Crowell officiating.
