Wayne Metheny, a loving husband, father, and a true man of God, passed away peacefully at his home in Oak Ridge on September 6, 2025. He was surrounded by his family after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Born on November 8, 1953, in Amherst, Ohio, Wayne was raised by his devoted grandparents, Ellis and Essie Metheny. A lifelong learner, he earned a bachelor's degree in business from Penn State, an associate degree in nursing from Lincoln Memorial University, and a master's degree in Health Administration.
Wayne dedicated his professional life to caring for others. He worked for over 25 years as an OR Nurse at Park West Medical Center, where he also served as a Urology Coordinator until his retirement in August of 2024. A true "jack of all trades", he was known for his incredible work ethic, and his ability to excel in a variety of fields throughout his life, including time as a prison guard, a job he often fondly recounted stories from to his family. He was also a member of the National Guard, an entrepreneur, an investment counselor, and held roles in restaurant management and as a shepherd/farmer.
Wayne found immense joy in giving to others. He was known for his generous spirit, always offering a hand, a listening ear, or a word of friendly advice. From volunteering his nursing skills to donating blood, he gave freely and without expectation. He embodied the quiet power of selfless acts, and his legacy of kindness will continue to grow long after his own time.
A faithful parishioner of Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Oak Ridge, Wayne's faith was a cornerstone of his life. He is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Betsy; his three sons, Ed, John, and Tony (Emary Dumouchel) of Knoxville, Tennessee; and his faithful dog, Charlie.
Wayne's memory will be cherished by all who knew him for his kind spirit, his dedication to his family, and his unwavering commitment to hard work and his faith. He will be deeply missed.
Family will be holding a Celebration of Life at St. Mary's Catholic Church September 27, 2025 at 10:00 AM. Mass immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
