We Etta May Correy, a treasured Grandmother, mother of Fullerton, California, departed this life peacefully on October 28, 2024, at the remarkable age of 103. Born on April 23, 1921, in Grand Junction, Iowa to Bruce and Ethel McCollom, where she was the second child of ten siblings, which all preceded her in death except for her younger brother, Larry McCollom, 87, who still resides in Iowa.
WeEtta was a pillar of strength and deeply cherished by all, especially her family. She is survived by her sons, Gary Correy of Athol, Idaho and Derrel Correy of Fullerton, California. She has seven Grandchildren; fourteen Great-Grandchildren and eight Great-Great-Grandchildren.
WeEtta was a proud graduate from Grand Junction High School in 1938, within the same year, she competed in the Iowa Beauty contest and secured 2nd place. In August 1942, she married Ross DeVere Correy and together they raised two sons while she dedicates her career to caring for the physically and mentally disabled at the Iowa State Hospital. WeEtta and Ross established a family business called The Midway Tavern that became the cornerstone of their community. After eight years of ownership, they decided to sale all and move to California. In 1956, they settled in Fullerton, California where they purchased a home that she would live in for the rest of her life, in the care of her son, Derrel Correy.
In her new chapter in Fullerton, she devoted herself to the Fullerton Handicapped School, within Woodcrest school, as an Assistant to the Physical Therapists that focused on children. Her commitment and hard work earned her the prestigious Employee of the Year award in 1981, a testament to her exceptional contributions.
Following her retirement, WeEtta embraced a variety of passions, including cross-stitch embroidery, reading, cooking and gardening. She actively participated in Bible study groups at Lutheran Calvary Church and extended her nurturing spirit to caring for her grandchildren and Woodcrest teachers' children. Throughout her life, WeEtta was a committed caregiver, always ready to support family members in need, including her loving husband, Ross.
WeEtta's adventurous spirit led her to travel extensively across the United States, Canada and six European countries, enriching her life with diverse experiences. Her home was a welcoming haven for many, often filled with visitors drawn by her grandson's reputation as a World Class Motorcycle Speedway rider.
