In Loving Memory of Weldon Eugene Fields Sr.

Weldon Eugene Fields Sr. entered this world on February 10, 1943, born to Elizabeth (Phillips-Fields) Reeder and Vernon Stanley Fields Sr. in the heart of Columbus, Ohio's American Addition. A life-long congregant of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Weldon embraced faith early on, finding solace and strength in his baptism.

His educational journey began at Pilgrim and Shepherd Elementary School and progressed through Champion Jr. High. In Junior High school, he mastered the craft of woodshop and ran track, which exceeded over to East High School. At East, his events included the long jump, 100-yard dash, 200-yard dash, and 400×1 relay. He was an all-city track state runner-up and all-city wrestling.

Upon completing his schooling, Weldon entered the workforce at Westin House and swiftly rose to become a leading foreman at Western Electrician, specializing in refrigerator manufacturing. He was Vice President of Fields Brother Landscaping alongside his career, a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit, and because of this, he started Mr. Dependable Landscaping.

Weldon's heart found its match in Bessie Louise Jones-Fields, with whom he welcomed a son, Weldon "Eugene" Fields Jr. After Bessie's passing on December 9, 1987, he found love again and married Brenda Elliott on December 10, 1994. Together, they cherished a life filled with travel cruises and spending time with family. His passions ranged from fishing to barbecuing and motorcycling to remote-controlled cars.

Weldon was a man of diverse interests known for his roller-skating bowling, his ability to teach swimming and water skiing, and his love for hunting. His affection for automobiles was matched only by his taste in jewelry and fashion. He loved cars and motorcycles and even taught his cousins how to ride.

He loved food, and he relished Brenda's chitlins. He took after his great-grandmother Mary Fields and followed 'The Young and the Restless' with excitement and zeal. His legacy in dog breeding is also noteworthy.

Family gatherings often revolved around Weldon's legendary backyard barbecues, a tradition that became a cherished memory for many. He was a nurturing presence, guiding his family on road trips, and he loved nature, which was evident in his landscaping.

Even as he took on the caretaker role for the church grounds by cutting the grass and removing snow, Weldon Sr.'s later years were spent in the cherished company of his great-grandson, Cypher T. Shepherd, and dog Blu2, even as he faced the challenges of cancer and dementia. Weldon Eugene Fields Sr. went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 5, 2023.

Weldon's memory is treasured by his beloved wife, Brenda Elliott-Fields, his son Weldon Eugene Fields Jr., three stepchildren Anita (Andrew) Willis, Sandra Monique Gillespie, Harvey Lee Gillespie Jr (Lisa), and his grandchildren: Kyle D'ontay Mitchell, Legen Simone Fields, Ebony Gillespie, Chantel Gillespie, Oddessey Willis, Tanira Willis, Charles Gillespie, Avery Gillespie, Jessie Gillespie, Starr Willis along with a host of great-grandchildren. His brothers, Vernon (Regina) Fields Jr., Stanley (Karen) Fields, Allen "Boo" Fields; Sister Debra Bolden, Katie Hairston. His special uncles, Charles Fields Sr. and Carl "Jean" Fields, and a vast circle of nephews, nieces, cousins, family, and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth (Phillips-Fields) Reeder and Vernon Stanley Fields Sr, his brother Barry (Shirley) Mixon Sr, his sister Marva Ann Sutton, his beloved Bessie, and his special friend Nathaniel (Joann) Shields; his absence is felt by many, including sisters-in-law Eliose Elliott, Mary Ellen Elliott, Lottie Ann Elliott, Angela McCauley, Carla Elliott, and brother-in-law Alfred (Berline) Elliott.

Weldon Eugene Fields Sr., known affectionately as Slim and Big Wel, leaves a legacy of love, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to family. His life was a tapestry of hard work, devotion, and joyful moments that will continue to inspire those who knew him.
