Wendell Charnock Obituary

Published by Legacy on Aug. 22, 2025.
Wendell French Charnock, 94, of Shacklefords, VA passed away August 21, 2025. Wendell was born March 27, 1931 in Norfolk, VA but as a boy moved to Mathews County where he graduated high school. After time spent in the merchant marines, and two years in the US Army, Wendell returned to Mathews, where he worked (and shot pool) in his mother's restaurant. It was in the restaurant that he met the love of his life, Miriam, with whom he would spend 65 beautiful married years. Together, they raised and loved four sons. Hunting, fishing, gardening and shooting pool were among his favorite hobbies, but nothing compared to time with family. Wendell is survived by his dear wife, Miriam; four sons, Rondell (Michele), Mark and his friend, Katie, Chris (Jackie), and Kevin (Trina); six grandchildren, Samantha Charnock, Christopher Charnock, Megan Brown (Austin), Ryan Charnock (Sophie), Morgan Williams (Justin) and Rebecca Charnock; five great-grandchildren, Piper, Lawson and Ledger Brown, and Tanner and Nash Charnock; with two more great-grandbabies due in the next few months. A celebration of life will be held 11 a.m., August 25th at New Hope United Methodist Church, 2466 Lewis B Puller Memorial Hwy, Saluda, VA, 23149. The family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m., just prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the New Hope United Methodist Church's General Fund, c/o PO Box 62, Shacklefords, VA 23156.
