Wendell "Wendy" Kaldenberg, a lifelong resident and dedicated community member of
Norwalk, Iowa, passed away on February 15, 2026, in Des Moines. Family will greet guests from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at Iles Norwalk Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 20, 2026, at the funeral home. Wendy will be interred in Evergreen Cemetery in Anita, Iowa following a luncheon at the funeral home.
Wendy was born on a farm in
Colfax, Iowa, to Dorothy and Albert Kaldenberg. As a young teen, he moved with his family to Norwalk and graduated from Norwalk High School in 1959. After high school, he met the love of his life, Meredith Steele, through mutual friends at Iowa State University. The two were married in 1962 and built a beautiful life together, raising two children, Jan and Scott. Meredith passed away in 1979, and in 1982, Wendy was blessed to find love again when he married Joni Kaldenberg, who preceded him in death in 2014.
Throughout his career, Wendy worked for Coca-Cola, Massey Ferguson, and American Can before stepping into entrepreneurship. In 1988, he purchased Jimmy's Restaurant, well known for its crowd favorites, pizza and onion rings. In 1994, he opened Wendy's Ice Cream Shop, later moving it to its current Norwalk location in 2000. The ice cream shop quickly became a local favorite and a gathering place for families and friends across the community.
Beyond his career, Wendy's true legacy was his service to Norwalk. He served as a volunteer firefighter for 43 years, earning the title of Firefighter of the Year in 2007. He was also a dedicated member of the Norwalk Masons and a Shriner for over 20 years. Wendy played a vital role in fostering community connection as one of the founding members of the Norwalk Chamber of Commerce in 1992. In 2021, his lifelong commitment to civic service was recognized with the Community Footprint Award.
Wendy's life was full of love, laughter, and family. He cherished camping trips, vacations, dancing, and hunting deer and pheasants. Above all, he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. Known for his mechanical know-how and helpful spirit, Wendy's garage door was always open, as he always had the right tool, the right part, and the right attitude to help anyone in need.
Those who knew Wendy will remember his kindness, dedication, and quiet strength. His passing marks the end of an era for Norwalk, but his legacy of service, friendship, and love for community will live on in the countless lives he touched.
Wendy is survived by his children, Jan Reece and Scott (Shelly) Kaldenberg; step-son, John Felson; six grandchildren: Jordan (Adam) Nihart, Zach (Brooke) Kaldenberg, Ben (Jordain) Reece, Shannon Kaldenberg, Henry Felson, and Hannah Felson; great grandchildren: Emmett and Everly Reece, Melrose Kaldenberg, and Liam Nihart; and sister, Lynda Murphy.
He was preceded by his parents; wife, Meredith; second wife; Joni; brother, Doyle Kaldenberg; and a son in-law, David Reece.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Wendy's name can be directed to the Shriner's Hospital or the Norwalk Fire Department.
