MANILA - Wendell Ray Poteet, 83, of Manila, peacefully passed from this life Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2023, at St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro. Born in Hubbard, Texas, to the late Raymond and Gladys Danford Poteet, Wendell was a 1958 graduate of Hubbard High School.
He worked 52 years in the cotton industry, retiring from Federal Cotton Warehouse in Manila in 2017. In recent years, he served as a city councilman, as well as the interim mayor of Manila. He was also a very active member of the Manila Lions Club.
His passions in life were woodworking and golf, having won many tournaments.
He is survived by his wife, Iris Sisk whom he met on a golf course and married in 2002; two daughters, Crickett Sweetwood (Jim) and Donna Longmire (Gary); his son, Anthony Poteet (Laura); nine grandchildren, Rikki Bowden, Reagan Cifredo, Raven Boxold (Jim), Andee Poteet, Amber Azbill, Jacob Poteet, Hannah Poteet, Clayton Poteet and Cammil Poteet; and 17 great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by a sister, Peggy Rose, and a brother, Eddie Dean Poteet.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Manila with the Rev. Jason Sutfin officiating. The family will accept visitors following the service in the church fellowship hall.
