Wesley Thomas Batey

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Wesley Thomas Batey of Jacksonville, Alabama. Born January 28, 1958, to James Batey and Helen Hodges Batey, Thomas passed peacefully October 13, 2025, at Grandview Medical Center in Birmingham, surrounded by loved ones. He was 67 years old.
A lifelong resident of Jacksonville, Alabama, Thomas was a diehard Crimson Tide football fan who loved watching and yelling "Roll Tide!" He loved spending time with his beloved wife Barbara (AKA "Punk") and his family. He was the most loving, kind, gentle, and selfless husband, father, pawpaw, and friend. He loved his family more than life, always smiling with reassurance, even in times of despair. He leaves behind a legacy of love like no other.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, James A. and Helen Hodges Batey. As the youngest of eight children, he is also preceded in death by two sisters, Bonnie Devers of Kentucky and Brenda Pritchett of Piedmont, and a son, Wesley Steve Batey of Jacksonville.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 50 years, Barbara Brooks Batey; one daughter, Tara M Cleveland (Roger) of Jacksonville; and grandchildren Taylor Calhoun (Nique Thompson) of Huntsville, Anna Calhoun (Jerry Marcum) of Tuscaloosa, Emma Batey of Jacksonville, Gavin (Hughes) Batey of South Carolina, and Noah and Addasyn Cleveland of Glencoe. He is also survived by three brothers, James Batey (Juanita) of White Plains, Mickey Batey of Jacksonville, and Ebben Batey of Wellborn; Two brothers-in-law, Pete Pritchett of Piedmont, and Gary Brooks (Vicki) of Indiana; along with two sisters, Becky Davis of Moundville, and Nellie Andrews of Jacksonville; and two sisters-in-law, Lucille Hamilton of Jacksonville, and Linda Williamson of Birmingham; and numerous cousins, friends, nieces and nephews who all cherished him.
There will be a memorial service to honor the life of Thomas held October 21, 2025 from 1:00 until 2:00 at Holley Springs Baptist Church in Anniston with Terry Sims, lifelong friend of Thomas and Barbara, officiating the service. The family will receive friends and loved ones from 12:00 until time for the service.
The family would like to specially thank Dr. Tucker and staff at Alabama Oncology, Dr. Anderson at Grandview Medical Center, Gentiva Hospice, and to all our friends and family, thank you for the calls, texts, thoughts, and prayers throughout the illness of our beloved "Pawpaw."
