Wesley Francis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 29 to Nov. 30, 2023.
Wesley James Francis of Charleston, SC, was unexpectedly taken from us on November 10, 2023, at the young age of 34. Wesley was born on March 13, 1989, and grew up in East Hampton, CT. He graduated from East Hampton High School, where he excelled on the varsity basketball team. He was the son of John Francis (Holiday, FL) and Susan Hopper and the stepson of Chris Hopper (South Glastonbury, CT)

Wes was unabashedly in his element as the compassionate friend, the jokester, the drinking buddy, the brother, the listener, the hugger and most importantly, the forever Momma's boy.

He was committed to making people from all walks of life happy through food and drink. Wes was passionate about his career in hospitality, working in fine dining restaurants in Connecticut, Providence, RI, Nantucket, MA, West Palm Beach, FL Boston, MA and Charleston, SC where he landed in 2020. At the time of his passing , Wes was the lead server at The Tempest in Charleston, SC and had recently started a pop-up venture called Low Country Kine, with Charleston Chef Hayden Riley, serving authentic Hawaiian fare every Sunday night.

Wes had an ease about him that belied his 6'4" frame and made people gravitate to him. The stories of him sparking true friendships with strangers who found themselves sitting at his bar or his table follow him through each of his restaurants.

Wes' gregarious nature and big goofy smile served him well as a seasoned bartender and server, but it was his unbridled love of his friends and family that made him so special. Whether spending quality time with his immediate family a.k.a "Family Shenanigans"; showing his nephews how to vacation while visiting his father in Florida: gathering for Easter at his aunt and uncle's as the only boy among five sisters and cousins; or reveling at Thanksgiving and "OBXmas" with a wider group of "aunts," "uncles," and "cousins" who were not related by blood but who were true family nonetheless; Wes ensured every time was a good time.

Equally important was the time he spent with his friends, who he considered as close and important to him as family. Whether they needed a laugh, a hug, a listening ear, the hard truth, or a pep talk Wes was eager to be that support .

Wes is survived by his mom, dad, stepdad, three sisters, a brother in-law, two young nephews, grandparents, aunts uncles, his much-loved dog, Beau, and about a million friends who all loved him and miss him deeply.

Wes' family invites family and friends to a Celebration of Wes' Extraordinary Life to be held Monday, December 4, 2023, from 4:00-8:00 PM at Warehouse 635, 635 New Park Ave, Unit 2-F West Hartford, CT.

The family asks that you consider donations to a memorial scholarship fund in honor of Wesley for deserving college students who work in the hospitality industry to make ends meet (https://gofund.me/aad7672e), or to Dorchester Paws Community Animal Shelter (www.dorchesterpaws.org).

To all the good "Peeps"(people) who entered into the Life of My son Wes...I cannot express My gratitude or My heartache for You All in adequately enough...but please know that I, and All of Wesley's family share Your shock and grief at his sudden tragic Departure...and we are so sorry for Your Loss as well...Please rest assure that the holes in his heart which have also made holes in All of Our hearts will be gradually filled in with the Love and Goodness that Wes poured out into all of our Souls...May we All be comforted by that gift of a man who lived to Serve so many of Us...As his custom often was to invite his "peeps" to "Come on Over" and meet down on the Corner of wherever their Paths would cross...please join us as we will take the Time to share a hug and a Memory or two...or just a smile or tear before we accept our new Reality of our Lives yet to be lived without his wonderful Presence here on Earth...Someday we "know" that Wes will again greet us with the Words to "Come on Over" and we will be together Forever...again Thank You All for the times in the past that each of You took in shaping Wes' heart to be the man that he became... in the many Forms of the Love that you have shared with him...Thank You again from the bottom of My broken heart... -Wesley's "Pops"

You and I became friends forever the moment we realized that 1) we were both named "Wes", that being an occasion for a party, and 2) share the same lifestyle, by and large, and could incite a party on a moment's notice, which we often did. Now Nantucket will always be "one Wes short". We, and I personally, will miss you, and miss knowing you are out there being the other Wes and thus the rest of me. Signed: The Other Nantucket Wes

I met Wes when I became a bartender at Smokey´s O Grady´s - currently The Tavern on 66. Between Wes and the friends he surrounded himself with I knew that not only was he a great person, but that he could make anyone feel welcome and make anytime fun. He and his friends were a huge family, that always made you feel like a part of it. Every Sunday him and the boys would be in for football. Well, they would really be in almost every night, but we have had many adventures together throughout those years and still kept in touch. I´m grateful to not only know Wes, but those that surrounded him. You could tell Wes was a genuine person and loved his life with everyone he met. It´s clear that his roots stayed with his childhood friends, but continued to grow from Rhode Island down to Florida. I´m heartbroken like so many and am truly so sorry for this tragedy and am sending my sincere condolences to his family, his furbaby Beau and many, many friends that became family. I hope with every story and picture shared it may give you some comfort in knowing how loved he was.
