Wesley Harold Thompson (92) of Greenwood, Indiana passed away on October 25, 2025. Wes was born August 3, 1933 on the Westside of Indianapolis to Margaret and Harold Thompson. In his early years, he lived in the Chicago area. They also lived for a brief time in Arizona. They moved back to Indianapolis where he went on to graduate from Washington HS in 1951.
After graduation, Wes went to work at Link Belt chain manufacturing (FMC). In 1953, he enlisted in the Air Force and served until March 1957. He was very proud of his Air Force years. He attained the rank of S/Sergeant and became an A & E Mechanic Crew Chief of B-47 bombers.
In 1952 Wes met the love of his life, Mary Ruth Gillespie, on a blind date. They were married in Indianapolis In December, 1954, and lived in Columbus, Ohio, where Wes was stationed.
Tom was born a year later – December 1955. Wes & Mary Ruth attended a small Columbus church who adopted them and their new baby. After leaving the Air Force in March, 1957, Wes & Mary Ruth moved back to Indianapolis where they joined Mary Ruth's home church – Garfield Park Baptist Church – where they would be members the remainder of their lives. Their second son, Mike, was born in March, 1959. In the spring of 1961, both of Wes's parents died 12 hours apart. He was 28 years old with two small children, but he felt God's comfort through the support of all his friends at Garfield Park Baptist Church.
In 1962 Wes and Mary moved to Greenwood, where they lived the rest of their lives. Both the boys went to Center Grove Schools from grades 1-12, and Wes was very proud his boys didn't have to change schools as he had done during his childhood.
Wes and Mary Ruth loved to travel and were able to take three week vacations each summer for 12 years, while the boys were growing up. They traveled from coast to coast and Canada. In their later years, they traveled to Alaska, Hawaii and went on many cruises. They were able to visit all 50 states.
Wes and Mary Ruth were both only children and had very small families, but their church became their family. Wes was very active on church boards and committees but was best known for his fun-loving spirit; he was usually the ring-leader for parties and retreat skits. Hokey-Pokey anyone??
Wes retired after 40 years at Link Belt and continued to work another 20 years at Thompson Printing with Mary Ruth and his son Mike. Wes loved golf and continued to play regularly and even at 91 years old he was playing twice a week. He loved his golf buddies.
In 92 years, Wes had many, many good years of happy times and years that were hard, but there was never a time without God and Jesus Christ in his life. His love of Christ and his family were the most important things in his life. He believed he had been truly blessed by his family and his wonderful church family at Garfield Park Baptist Church.
Wes's favorite phrase was "What A Life" and he truly believed he lived it.
Wes was proceeded in death by his wife of 70 years, Mary Ruth. He is survived by his sons Tom (Karla) and Mike (Leslie); grandchildren Aubrey (Ethan) Moses, Brittany (Blake) Feldman, Wes Thompson, Daniel (Allie) Thompson; great- grandchildren Grady and Cam Feldman, Eisley Thompson, Milo Moses, Kai Thompson.
Friends may visit from 11:00 AM until the service time at 1:00 PM Saturday, November 1, 2025 at G.H. Herrmann Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 5141 Madison Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana 46227. Wes will be laid to rest at Mount Pleasant Greenwood Cemetery.
